How do you access its batteries?

Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws from the back of the case. Lift off the back. The two AA batteries are located in the battery holder. Replace batteries, case back and screws.

Where is the "off" switch or "off" position of the meter function dial ?

No external off switch. Don’t leave it in resistance measurement positions. Also do not leave a test probe plugged into the DC Low Resistance input jack.

This might sound kind of dumb, but I’m a beginner electronics student which ones do the negative and positive leads go in on the multimeter?

Black in common (COM), red depends on what your reading. But it will work whichever way you put the leads - they’re just wire. Red is usually associated with positive, black negative or common (floating ground). I’m an engineer, so we use reverse nomenclature (holes versus electrons).

It says "made in the usa or imported". which one is it? i want the one made in the usa.

I too, would have preferred an American made product, but the one I received came from an offshore company. I must admit that it works very well, but not all do.
