The definitive, official illustrated book on the U.S. Coast Guard, published in a fully updated and revised edition. Since September 11, the Coast Guardโs mottoโSemper Paratus, "Always Ready"โhas taken on new meaning. From protecting our coastlines to drug interdiction, combat missions, and guarding against terrorism as part of the Department of Homeland Security, the United States Coast Guard maintains a constant vigil in the safeguarding of Americans. Written by an outstanding team of historians and distinguished officers, including the current Commandant USCG Admiral Thad Allen, The Coast Guard has more than 350 pages that tell the story from its origins as both the Revenue Cutter Service and U.S. Lifesaving Service to lighthouses, ice breakers, and the heroes of Hurricane Katrina. Essays on history, search and rescue, and aviation all have one common focus: the incredibly trained and highly motivated people that make up the Coast Guard. Review: Great gift for Dad - I bought this for my Dad's birthday. He was in the Coast Guard in the early '60s. I don't think I have ever heard him sound so pleased with one of my gifts. He called to say how unusual a gift it was and how impressive the cover was. It is full of great pictures and information. That really pleased me because when buying online you can't see those things. I think he was a little disappointed that it was light on some of the interesting things that happened during his time in the Coast Guard, but he seemed sufficiently impressed and I would recommend this to any Coast Guard alum. Review: A beautiful informative book. - The photos are wonderful and the book is easy to read and informative. Would recommend as a keepsake to anyone who loves the Coast Guard.

Excellent coffee table book
If you have served, retired from, currently serving, reservist, or an auxilarist in the United States Coast Guard, you would appreciate this book. Further, it would be a nice addition to any maritime/nautical collection. With a foreward written by Walter Cronkite, a self-described CG fan, it starts with his wonderful tribute to this (often forgotten) armed service. If you are looking for a comprehensive book that covers all ratings, this is not it, as this focuses on the operational mission of the Coast Guard and history. The pictures are abundant, and it is nicely written. It is a definite must-have and it would make a great retirement or promotion gift.

Awesome book! Great detail in information w/ elegant cover.
This was a purchase for my son who recently graduated CG OCS. When the book arrived, I was immediately captivated by the leather-like soft cover and raised Coast Guard emblem in the center. It is a large book suitable for coffee table display. The information inside chronically the CG from infancy through the War on Terror. It is certainly a "must have" for Coasties, their families or anyone who supports the CG. The CG is our smallest military service branch charged with a very big job- Homeland Security. The information in this book will help anyone come to a better appreciation for the CG motto "Semper Paratus" (Always Ready).

Very nice. I'll add it to my Coast Guard library ...
Well put together! Very nice. I'll add it to my Coast Guard library for sure. Definitely put this one on the shelf right next to The Coast Guard Oracle by James David.

Great look at the USCG
This is a large coffee table type book filled with tons of photos and information on the U.S. Coast Guard through the years. Many shots of them in action as well as much of the boats, ships, and aircraft they have used.

THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE
This book is nothing short of a family heirloom. To be cherished and passed down for generations to come. The cover is a "soft" hard cover. In the center is a large raised Coast Guard emblem. The pages are thick and glossy and full of pictures, drawings and stories from "Coasties" past and present. I have been active duty Coast Guard for 19 years and this is my retirement gift to me. The book retails for $75.00 and any price under that is a bargain for this phenomenal book.
