Ein wunderbares Buch vom Überwinden von Vorurteilen: Major Pettigrew hat eigentlich irgendwie mit dem Leben abgeschlossen und ist von vielen alltäglichkeiten genervt. Doch dann kommt er in näheren Kontakt mit der aus Pakistan stammenden Besitzerin des örtlichen Kramladens. Es entwickelt sich eine wunderbare romatische Geschichte, in der sich einige unerwartete Paare treffen, ein verzweifelter, engstirnig gwordener junger Muslim neue Hoffnung und Perspektiven bekommt und sich ein verknöcherter alter Lateinlehrer als wahrer Held erweist.

『ペティグリュー少佐、最後の戦い』といっても戦争モノではありません。 70代の退役軍人、故郷で地元の名士として引退生活を送る主人公が 弟の急死による遺産相続問題と息子との関係に悩み、パキスタン系移民の未亡人と恋に落ち、 それにまつわるいざこざに巻き込まれる顛末が描かれています。 古き良き英国紳士である主人公を始めとした登場人物の設定や階級社会イギリスを象徴する場面の描写が ステレオタイプ、意地悪やエゴはあっても根っからの悪人はいないので安心して読めるものの、 最後まで予想通りの展開。 これを微笑ましく愛すべきと思うか、物足りなく感じるかは読み手の嗜好の問題でしょうか。 イギリス英語らしい言い回し（特に主人公のセリフ）が意外に楽しめたのは拾い物でした。

I found this story enjoyable, relaxing and yet compelling to read. It was one of those books that you want to have a happy ending and it fulfils that expectation with surprises and clever,apt and warm humour. The characters are memorable and fascinating. Nothing was predictable at all, and yet it is a very English read that is both traditional and modern all at the same time. I'm so glad I read it and hope others will also enjoy it. What a wonderful film it would make.It offers vivid scenes that remain after the end is reached.
