I bought this book with a little fear, since other huge monographs on Ppenings tend to fall short of expectations, or leave key variations out of their contents..NOT SO with this winner!This book is just ESSENTIAL if you play the Pirc at all!The author hits all the key lines and variations in his chapters, explains why they are effective or not and gives many, many games and lines from those variations...his annotations are clear, easy to understand and from what I have seen, he leaves nothing out!He includes many reccomendations and improvements throught out the book to whet your appetite.I think this is one of the best opening books I have purchased and started in the past year...it is that good!Again, clear, concise notes, the columns are all bold faced that you can follow easily, the author really explains the Whys and Why Not's behind this opening and does not just praise it from one side or the other... he is critical of the black side when it is appropriate and also recommends improvements and gives truthful comments on all those variations covered in the book!Id recommend this book to ANYONE that plays the Pirc. Is it an intense book, and you cant and should not just speed read and try and find the "Good stuff" i.e. variations that u like or the games, but READ it and understand what the Author us explaining and take it slow, chapter by chapter... its a very rewarding experience and will definitely improve your Chess .!

Looking for a good opening with black? I'm a low to average rank player and this book was excellent. A lot of in depth coverage analyzing each and every move and then lengthy analysis on what other moves should or shouldn't be made.Like all of the everyman books they cover the opening very well. This one is exceptional because of the in-depth analysis on the pirc. Need to know the Austrian Attack over 100 pages alone with heavy analysis on how to play this line. He covers the classical, accelerated classical, the 150, odds and ends Bc4, Bg5, (which he says are rare but at my level are played quite often.If you like to get white into your game with d6 for black this is your book. Finally, you can tell by the page length that this is heavy in detail. If you don't like the austrian you may not like this book as extensive coverage is on that line for good reason.

This books is a superb overview of the Pirc Defence, covering modern theoretical developments. 1.e4, d6 2. d4, Nf6 3. Nc6, Bg7... It comprises a number of illustrative games in each chapter with some analysis of alternative moves. The book covers each of the important lines that white should play on the fourth move. The Austrian Attack (two chapters), the Fianchetto Variation, the Classical Variation, the Accelerated Classical, the 4...f3 System, the 150 attack 4...Bg5 4...Bc4 4...Bf4 and 4...Be2, Nf6 (like the Classical Variation) 5.g4 the Spike.However, for me, there is not enough coverage of lines and analysis of alternative moves. This is an excellent book to play against the Pirc Defence as white, but not complete enough to play it as black. The books I prefer cover many lines with thourough analysis. This book needs to be complimented with the older classic "Pirc Alert" which is also in an illustrative games format and doesn't cover all the lines. But using them together you will have an excellent repertoire for playing the Pirc Defence.

A definitive Bible on this awesome opening. This book is so helpful to me that I have used it as a teaching tool for my students who are looking for less travelled responses to 1) e4. It's deep, I've owned it for seven months and have yet to get through half of it! I especially love the chapter on the 150 Attack and the first three or four chapters are devoted to the Austrian Attack. This book paired with "Dangerous Weapons: The Pirc and Modern" makes for a solid understanding of this swashbuckling opening.

..and it is not the Pirc.James Virgus wrote an excellent book, that includes both theory and exemplary games to clarify a variation. Many books don't do that and focus only on the theory which is a pity as often the explanation how the opening can lead to a win is best described in an exemplary game.I will not play the Pirc as black, after studying this book. The reason simply is that there are too many interesting attacking lines, like the Austrian attack and its many variations, the 150 attack or a Jugoslav attack move order.Black has to be very careful and needs to play with great accuracy, particularly in the opening.I prefer the French defense, which still offers me better counter play opportunity particularly in the beginning of the game. Plus, I can chose more or less in which direction I would like to take the game, something the Pirc does not allow.

Several pages in this book are blank, with multiple paragraphs and passages missing from the book. These are not intentional, as sold this is an incomplete product.

Beware! This is a very old 2007 edition of Everyman Chess; although in fresh condition ! Whenever you are buying Everyman chess books in India ; look for the edition year as it appears that old unsold stock is being bought and unloaded by vendors. Most of the games are of 2006 and earlier and no recent games are there. There is no value for money.

Vigus gives thorough analysis to most variations either side is likely to meet. He writes in a clear and engaging style.
