Steady Rest

Fits perfectly, works beautifully- easy to adjust, accurate, stable, no problems.

Unfortunately the description is very lacking.I have a 7x12 lathe with a 3"diameter chuck, was hoping to use this m but without my spending more money for a spacer it is useless. The overall height of this is maybe 3" so less than 2" from bed to center.Might work on a watchmakers lathe with a 1/2" chuck.

Unit works well as advertised but the bed locking screw should be on the other end of the base. The brass rub guides with their locking screws, as I use it, are on the tailstock side, and the screw that locks it to the bed is on the back side. Makes it awkward to tighten it to the bed. If you reverse the unit then the headstock is in the way of the three locking screws as I use it quite close to the headstock to support clock arbors while turning pivots.

Replaced the supports with ball bearing tipped supports and rest works wonders for holding work. This has much less vibration.

Most of the steady rest is fine, but be careful with the clamp! I tightened mine a bit too much and it cracked. The casting seems like it's pretty poor quality.I'm going to try replacing the clamp with the riser clamp, PN 13920. It appears to be a piece of machined metal rather than a casting. If that works, then it's definitely worth the extra $12. I'll update the review once I get the part in.EDIT 04/03/2019I received PN 13920 from Sherline. It works great! The original clamp is of exceedingly poor quality, but the machined part fits well enough and seems like it'll last.

This is a very nice steady rest for the Sherline brand lathes.
