The Pirate is a superb carabiner with multiple uses. Great addition to the cache of rope access equipment. Very well built and reliable.

As a relatively new SRT tree climber, I like the rock exotica locking mechanism though I’ve read some people find it funky since it is upside down compared to some other manufacturers products. I bought a handful of these. One rockO with a wire gate, one rockO without and this pirate HMS style. All really great! This HMS style is a little thicker than the RockOs but fits the eye to eye prusik, hitch climber pulley and rope wrench tether perfectly.

The carabiner is great, looks pretty cool and functions properly, lightweight. The only reason for rating it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is more difficult to unlock and open than any other locking biner I've had. You have to normally use two hands to mess with it unless you want to fiddle around with it using one hand until you get it unlocked. It has an extra safety measure which you need to pull the gate down first, and then you may twist it open. Not a terrible idea adding extra safety to a life saving device, however it isn't necessary and makes it more difficult to use than preferred. Still, a very nice piece for the most part!

I have sinced moved on to primarily using Magnetrons, but these are a quality product and my first go to if I am not using a Magnetron. If yo you know what you want and how you are going to use them, these will deliver.

Some of my favorites. The round cross section works well with the top of a hand ascender. The finger indents on the locking gate make it a little easier to operate than most gates of this style. These also fit nice in the hydra pulley.

By far my favorite carabiner

I use this in single and double rope tree climbing. Safe and well built product. Also use the Rock exotica rockD You can use this product with confidence. Always a nice feeling when your life is at stake! Also a great item in a BOB.

I like all my Rock Exotica gear and already had a Pirate carabiner. Decided to get a few more to create a small climbing set. What I didn't realize then is there are at least two versions of this Pirate carabiner. This one requires a downward gate press, then a rotation, then a pull to open the gate. The ORCA version, the one I already had, uses an UPWARD gate press before the rotation and pull. It's challenging to work with mixed versions of carabiner gate locks. Just in case this matters. The three star is probably too low. The quality of the product is fine, and had I looked at the picture carefully, I could easily have seen the gate opening scheme. But I didn't and fell pray to two different biners that share the same name.
