However, in my experience, calibrating the meter was not simple and it ended up costing me quite a bit more money in the end. The main reason for this is that the directions for the powders supplied with the kit for the calibration solutions say to mix them with distilled water. The assumption seems to be that distilled water will have a ph of 7. However, I did some research and found that is often not the case for commercial brands of distilled water. For instance, the brand carried by my grocery store was reported on the Web to have a ph of around 5.6 (once I finally calibrated my meter correctly, I measured it and the reading I got was in that range). I found it difficult to find a brand that actually had a ph of 7. I assume using water that varied significantly from 7 would throw off the calibration and make the meter readings unreliable. I asked the vendor of the meter about this and they verified that the ph values of distilled water will vary but they couldn't recommend a brand. I started researching bottled water to see if any of them had a ph of 7. The range was wide (I think it was from about 4 - 8). Additionally, while there were some brands that were close to 7, the numbers reported even for the same brand varied by about +-.5 (sometimes more) based on the source, distributor and who did the testing. I finally opted to buy the ph calibration solutions already prepared and where the ph solutions are tested in the lab. The kit I purchased on Amazon contained 4 bottles. Three contained the ph solutions for calibrating at 4, 7 and 10. The fourth bottle contained a solution that you can use for storing the tip of the meter when not in use. I believe the vendor claimed the solutions were accurate to about +-.1. Some of reviewers seemed to challenge that claiming a variance of+-.3, but I felt that was still better than the other options I had researched. You get a lot of solution in each bottle, so you can measure out a small amount each time you calibrate and make it last a long time that way.The other thing I foung difficult was the actual steps for calibrating the meter. There is a typo on the instructions on the box, and the instructions that were inside the box, that makes it unclear how long to hold down the calibration button before the meter indicates that it's calibrating for the ph of 7. For the calibration at the ph of 4, it says to hold down the button for about 3 seconds. I never did figure out a consistent method for getting the meter to start calibrating at one or the other. It seems to toggle from one to the other when you hold down the button, but without much consistency. I emailed the vendor about the directions but I dont feel like I got a clear answer. Eventually, I was able to complete the calibration through trial and error.So far, the meter seems to work fairly well and be consistent to within about +-.25. I think it's probably accurate to about +-.3, which is fine for my needs, but given the calibration challenges, and the fact that there are small variations in readings for the same substance, this meter may not be the best choice for someone that needs a high level of precision.A couple of other points to be aware of with this kit. First, if you do opt to use the calibrating powders that come with the kit, you get two packs of the ph 7 and two of the ph 4, and you can save the solutions in a container once you mix the powder and water, so you shouldn't need more. And if you do, there are vendors on Amazon that sell the packets, so it's not like the meter is worthless if you run out of solution as I believe one or two other reviews indicated.Second, the ph strips seem old and faded. I tried them with a couple of liquids that were acidic and they didn't change color (tried both the strips for measuring acids and the ones for measuring bases). ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tested With a Wide Range of Test Solutions. Very Happy With the Accuracy, Resolution & Consistency! *by G***S on Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2016* Your browser does not support HTML5 video.  I love science and chemistry, so testing meters like this is fun.This is a great PH Meter sold by Xpert Omatic.It is very simple and accurate and can be calibrated infinitely for a long life.~Test Setup~As you can see in the video, I tested this meter on a wide range of liquids. Between all of the takes and in setting up the video, I tested each liquid at least 6 times each and got pretty much the same reading every time. My distilled water solution actually jumped around quite a bit from all of the testing so I used fresh distilled on this last take. I'm very happy with the consistency I got between all of my tests.~Ease of Use~It couldn't get any simpler really. Turn it on and stick it in the solution. Even calibration is easy.~Longevity~As long as you rinse this thing with distilled water after each use, it should last a lifetime. Calibrate it before anything requiring high accuracy.~What could be improved?~Make the back light stay on for 5-10 sec more. Minor gripe, but it can sometimes turn off before the reading has stabilized.~Conclusion~A great PH meter at a great price that is super easy to use. Don't waste your money. Calibration is a nightmare, and the unit regularly misreads at "7ph" and will not change no matter what solution is used. I've seen people responding saying that exposing the probe to the air causes this, but that's not true for me. I followed the directions to the letter. I can't calibrate in the 9ph solution without it changing to "7", and removing the battery to fix this error means a complete re-calibration, which means another 9ph error as the last step. Very frustrating to say the least.
