does it have automatic shut off? how long will it stay on?

It has automatic shut off. The screen will turn off automaticly after 5-7 mins as long as you do not move the jaws. Thank you

Can this be changed to 32nds or 16ths as the smallest fractions? Thank you in advance for any assistance you could provide.

The caliper will automatically convert to the smallest fraction such that 4/128" will display as 1/32". However it does not allow reducing the precision so that it would round to the nearest 1/64".

How long does the battery last when off? Most calipers will drain battery even when off in order to maintain storage of the zero value.

Off is off, zero is established by "zeroing" it once turned on. I've had mine over a year and it's on the original battery.

Are the jaws on this caliper hardened?

Hard to say (haha) The caliper jaws are stainless, and very durable. Will scratch a machine table that was tested at RC 54. No info from clockwise on what ss alloy they use...and not all ss is even hardenable! However, we replaced our (high end brand name) dial calipers with the clockwise, and the jaws have proven accurate and durable
