To leave that ending RIGHT THERE LIKE THAT!!!Brilliant little bastards. 😏Seriously, I'm looking down at the progress percentage as I'm reading and seeing 97%, 98%, and I'm like....no, no, there's not enough left. How is this going to work?? So basically my heart is a giant open chasm until the next book comes out. GREAT. It's not like the world isn't in enough shambles as it is, lol.Rereading Aurora Rising immediately prior to this book (which just seemed a no-brainer, entirely appropriate, like possibly disrespectful if you didn't) was like reuniting with old friends and I grinned like an idiot through most of it, remembering old moments and being surprised by things I'd forgotten. It was also great to piece things together knowing what you already knew having read it before. I found that characters I hadn't clicked with as well the first time through were much easier to acclimate to on the second run. In fact, I enjoyed every last one of them immensely. Sinking back into this series has been the greatest reprieve from all the chaos going on in the world right now.On to Aurora Burning! Again, I found myself grinning like an idiot for what I would normally consider ENTIRELY too much on a normal day when I started this book but for these authors, there is no limit. NONE. The character's pitch-perfect witty banter, the seamless flow of action sequences, the pounding after pounding our favorite Aurora Legion Squad takes right out the gate, just craziness! And yet, flawless. Amie and Jay weave in some whimsical and quizzingly mysterious plot twists (that sure, if you're paying attention you can probably untangle upfront but who cares?! Because you LOVE these characters and THE RIDE and you want to see where all this leads and so you're IN IT, lol) and we get to see some fantastic character development that we were harping for in Aurora Rising (looking at you, Zila and Kal, and definitely Auri ~ holy cow). Some interesting new characters, crazy space stations, fun new spaceships (YAAASSS) and just an excellent sci-fi adventure THAT I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT HANGING RIGHT THERE.Bloody brilliant. And yet...my aching heart. I'm not joking. My chest literally hurts, lol. So well crafted. 15 Gadrillion million stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

First of all my first impression immediately on finishing - I assumed there would be a third book in the series but to leave off everything in a huge freaking cliffhanger (one.? Make it five) is just cruel and unfair. Finish this installment and leave some stuff open is legitimate. Leaving the whole thing open at the climax is just mean.I don't think this book needed to be quite this long. The emerald city escapades were about three times too long. A lot of stuff happened in this book but it seemed heavy on the action and rather light on character development.There were quite a few plot twists. They not only lack foreshadowing, we are giving conflicting evidence that later turns out to be untrue.I liked the way the squad was coming together but then when a big secret comes out they all turn on the person it's about. I think their reaction was overly harsh and I'm disappointed in Auri and the rest of them. It was totally a catch 69 (you're mad you weren't told the truth but when you discovered it you reacted in the worst possible way). Judging a person based on their background is a really mean reaction.I don't get Zila. I liked her backstory and I'm glad we learned it but closing off your emotions shouldn't make you talk like a robot. What is up with her speech patterns? She doesn't even use abbreviations.Scarlett was my least favorite character and I really didn't need a whole lecture about her cleavage. I liked her taking charge in the second half but the scatter brained flirt vibe was still too heavy for someone who successfully completed her training in an elite academy. She doesn't remember anything she learned because she was flirting or making out? Sigh.The big secret about the twins came out of nowhere - zero foreshadowing.There were some cool plot devices and things coming full circle, but the book as a whole felt overdone. It would probably have benefitted from a trimmer plot.

I am honestly in shock. The way everything was executed, characterization, plot, all of it was stunning. You're probably gonna need a heart monitor though, and I say that with love. Also, as a disabled kid only a bit older than Finian... I wish I could describe what his strength and grit and heart mean to me. He's genuine, and he's not representation for the sake of representation. So thank you. Squad 312 forever.

It's not often that I like the middle book of a trilogy more than I did the first but in this case I did! No time was spent in marking time or building a story - it was action, followed by action, followed by more action. And then, bang, it finished. Just like that. No explanations, no conclusions. It was the most abrupt ending I think I have ever read and I loved it.My main connection with the series is basically with the characters. Kaufman and Kristoff write young people so well. They have no fear of stereotypes and use them well. The banter between the members of the group is smart and funny. The one really close relationship is handled nicely and we do not have to read pages of what happens between them.There are some amazing reveals along the way and not everyone is who we thought they were. Many questions are raised too and we now have to wait until book 3 to have them answered. It is going to be a long wait.

I liked the first book, liked the premises, the overall story arc and the characters weren’t stellar, but interesting enough.Sadly, this sequel doesn’t hold up to that. Although 500 pages long, in about half of it, nothing of relevance to characters or plot is told. We learn a bit about Zila, but that’s a few pages and that was it. No more depth to any of the other characters. Instead, they start behaving in uncharacteristic ways and get into the „too-stupid-to-live“-territory. Most of the revelations weren’t too surprising, but I do admit that there were one or two twists that were cool enough. Those prevented me from DNFing it altogether, although I was skimming at times just to get it over with.The crew, now minus one member, is searching for clues to how Aurora is supposed to trigger the Eshvaren‘s weapon and prior to that, finding said weapon. They are persecuted by the enemy’s GIA agents, by Kal‘s slightly unhinged sister and the rest of the galaxies because now they are worth a huge bounty.By some unexplained deus ex machina help from unexpected sources, they get out of most of their dire straights. Right until the rushed end that ended in what can only be described as the worst. Cliffhanger. Ever. The whole book is slow, full of not too interesting stuff and then there is not enough pagetime left to wrap it all up in some halfway decent way, but let everything hang over the literal abyss... really?!?I don’t know if I am going to continue with the series, because of the pacing, the way the characters became something unrecognizable and the bad bad cliffhanger that obviously is added to compel me to buy the next book. Not cool.

While I did I really enjoy this, I didn't absolutely love it... but that is for purely subjective reasons. Some of the plot developments were fairly obvious pretty quickly and while that isn't always a bad thing for me I did find these ones a teensy bit annoying/over-dramatic? But the writing and pacing remains great and the characters are SO fantastic in their weird and wonderful ways. Also I am HERE for Tyler and Saeedi (Taeedi? Saylor?). ⭐⭐⭐ from me but I definitely recommend reading, especially if you enjoyed book 1

Questo mi ha stupita, soprattutto perché l’esperienza mi ha insegnato che di solito il secondo libro di una trilogia tende a essere meno avvincente o a configurarsi come un volume di passaggio che collega l’inizio e la fine della saga.La staticità è un problema che questo libro non conosce. È azione, seguito da altra azione, che sfocia in uno dei finali più inaspettati e sconcertanti che abbia mai visto. A un certo punto della propria vita di lettori, tutti abbiamo incontrato la nostra buona dose di conclusioni che ci lasciano con il fiato sospeso, un buco al posto del cuore e il macerante bisogno di avere tra le mani il seguito: questo è uno di quei libri. Finisce così improvvisamente, così bruscamente e in un modo che ti fanno solo desiderare di poter mettere le mani sul terzo libro per assicurarti di quanto sia grave il danno. La sofferenza che sai che proverai rimane lì, in sospeso, perché termina tutto così rapidamente che non si ha nemmeno il tempo di capire cosa sia successo. Si rimane lì, in attesa del terzo libro per capire quanto male siano andate le cose – come quando fai un incidente e sei troppo frastornato per riuscire a fare altro che startene lì, impalato, in attesa di chissà cosa.Questo libro è davvero un ottovolante, una montagna russa di emozioni che finisce proprio così, come una giostra di Gardland, quelle piene di giri della morte, discese vertiginose che ti fanno sentire lo stomaco in gola, velocissime, e che finiscono improvvisamente in modo brusco e prima che tu abbia capito che è finita ti ritrovi giù, a cercare ancora di comprendere.Proprio come il primo capitolo di questa saga, anche Aurora Burning è una lettura perfetta per ragazzi. Ha tutte le carte in regola per intrattenerli in un’avventura che non si ferma mai, un rollcoaster di emozioni che rendono quasi impossibile mettere giù questo libro. Si tratta di una lettura avvincente, che ti spinge ad andare avanti con lo stesso ritmo serrato con cui procede il racconto – io ho fatto le tre di mattina in più di un’occasione perché non riuscivo ad accantonare il libro.Come ho anticipato, ho apprezzato questo libro più del primo sotto molti punti di vista. Ma cosa ho apprezzato?Lo humor: come il primo libro, anche questo secondo è ricco di dialoghi sarcastici e di uno humor che i due autori sono bravi a bilanciare. Il contenuto del primo libro era più leggero e umoristico, più sarcastico e scanzonato; mano a mano che la trama va verso eventi più drammatici, lo humor si equilibra e si mischia con riflessioni e dialoghi più profondi, più drammatici e più seri. L’equilibrio è piacevole, godibile, e alterna momenti di risate con altri di pathos, a volte capaci di strappare un sorriso, altre volte in grado di farti diventare lucidi gli occhi.Ho apprezzato tantissimo vedere come le relazioni si stringono, i legami si fanno più saldi. Nel primo libro avevamo a che fare con un manipolo di persone che non si conosceva e che era finito insieme per caso. Ma da questa casualità ora è nato qualcosa di buono, qualcosa di profondo e sincero: le difficoltà li hanno spinti a unirsi, a conoscersi e hanno imparato a considerarsi una vera famiglia. Il loro rapporto cominciava già a cambiare nel primo libro, ma è in questo secondo che i legami si consolidano davvero e si cementano. Questo riguarda i rapporti di amicizia, come quello tra Finian e Aurora, che viene esplorato per la prima volta, o Scarlett e Zila, ma anche tra le coppie.Nel primo libro abbiamo visto gli albori della romance tra Kal e Aurora; in questo secondo libro la loro relazione si evolve e diventa più profonda e matura, più consapevole da parte di entrambi. Prima era Kal a provare l’irresistibile sentimento dettato da una sorta di imprinting che si è innescato in lui alla vista di Aurora; in questo secondo libro cambiano i sentimenti che Aurora prova per lui e dalla possibilità di conoscersi meglio si sfocia in un amore profondo e sincero, che per lei diventerà letteralmente un monito a ricordare ciò per cui combatte. È un sentimento che matura un passo alla volta, conoscendosi, parlando, aprendosi l’un l’altro – e che purtroppo è anche gravato da un terribile segreto che ne minaccia la stabilità.Cresce anche la relazione tra Scarlett e Finian. Non è mai mancata l’attrazione tra i due, lo si vedeva fin dal primo capitolo, ma quei flirt giocosi diventano qualcosa di più quando Finian comincia a diventare un vero appoggio per Scarlett. A un certo punto, dopo un certo avvenimento, Finian si dimostra per lei una vera ancora su cui poter fare affidamento. Da una parte Scarlett gli mostra i suoi momenti di fragilità, quelli in cui è più vulnerabile, dall’altra Finian le dimostra di esserci sempre per lei, anche al di là dei loro flirt e delle loro battute sarcastiche. Lui vede più di una bellissima ragazza quando guarda Scarlett, più del suo bel corpo; lei vede più della sua disabilità quando guarda lui. Ciò che ho amato di loro è proprio questa capacità di apprezzarsi e volersi bene a tutto tondo, letteralmente nel bene e nel male, anche quando gli eventi precipitano.Zila merita una parentesi a sé. In questo discorso di approfondimento e conoscenze, Zila merita il posto d’onore. Nel primo volume, a lei erano dedicati pochi capitoli e anche quei pochi erano di una manciata di righe ciascuno. Solo qui possiamo parlare a buon diritto di conoscere finalmente un personaggio che era rimasto nell’ombra fino a questo momento. Ci vengono rivelate informazioni importanti del suo passato, ma soprattutto ci viene dato uno scorcio diretto sulla sua personalità, sul suo modo di vedere e di sentire. Forse questa è la parte più importante, perché Zila ha un modo molto particolare di vivere la sua vita emotiva e sentimentale e avere uno scorcio su questo significa anche che lei stessa si sta aprendo, si sta facendo conoscere dal resto della squadra, cosa difficilissima per qualcuno dalla sensibilità così particolare. In più di un’occasione mi sono domandata se si possa trattare di una forma leggera di morbo di Asperger. Se fosse così, sarebbe ancora meglio perché darebbe spazio e rappresentazione a una categoria di persona che generalmente trova poca espressione nei libri. È una piccola Sheldon Cooper, che sta imparando a crescere e cambiare piano piano intorno alla sua famiglia, che impara a venire a patti con il fatto che prova emozioni, sentimenti, anche quando vorrebbe che così non fosse. La crescita di Zila è un viaggio continuo nella sensibilità profonda di una persona che ha poca dimestichezza con questo lato di sé.Una sorpresa inaspettata sono stati Saedi e Tyler. Per cause di forza maggiore si trovano costretti a passare del tempo insieme, a conoscersi, e in più di un’occasione ho avuto la sensazione che gli autori volessero farci vedere un’attrazione tra di loro. Non dovrei, ma io non posso fare a meno di sperare in uno svolgimento in questo senso – lo so, ma “enemis to lover” è il mio guilty pleasure preferito tra tutti i tropes letterari. Hanno chimica, quella bella tensione tra nemici che trovano qualcuno da combattere insieme e si trovano ad allearsi; hanno background e caratteri profondamente diversi, ma potrebbero aiutarsi a crescere a vicenda: Saedi sa qualcosa di Tyler che lui ignorava e potrebbe insegnargli ad accogliere quella parte di lui; d’altra parte lei è piena di rabbia, rancore e istinto alla guerra, lui potrebbe darle pace, stabilità, un nuovo modo di vedere il mondo attraverso occhi che non vedano la guerra come unica soluzione. Potrebbero essere positivi a vicenda e credo che questo li renda una possibile coppia piena di potenziale.Risvolti inaspettati e alcuni misteri che ci accompagnano lungo tutto il libro. Mi piace che ci siano cose di un libro che si trascinano, quesiti che non vengono risolti entro la fine del volume, ma che passano da uno all’altro all’interno di una saga per creare un filo rosso che si snoda lungo tutti e tre. Per quanto possano rendere l’attesa più snervante, sono anche quelli che fomentano il desiderio di andare avanti, che rendono più coesa la narrazione in una saga. Di tutti questi risvolti inaspettati, quello che mi ha intrigato di più è legato ai misteriosi doni che la squadra ha ricevuto da un donatore senza nome. Strani, ma utili al momento giusto – cosa che per tutto il tempo porta a pensare a un personaggio, forse ignoto, forse conosciuto, che possa viaggiare nel tempo o avere qualche capacità di previsione del futuro. Il mistero non viene risolto alla fine della storia e rimane in sospeso per essere spiegato – forse – nel prossimo libro.Cosa invece mi ha convinto poco?In primo luogo, la reazione esagerata a una certa rivelazione sul passato di Kal. Mentire su se stessi, soprattutto con la persona che ami, non è sicuramente una cosa positiva e qui non voglio sicuramente giustificare la scelta sbagliata di Kal. Ma la reazione della squadra alla rivelazione contraddice cose che loro stessi avevano detto. Ad esempio, quando Scarlett accusa Kal del fatto che sia tutta colpa sua se Saedi li stava cercando, nonostante lo stesso Kal avesse già proposto un suo allontanamento per proteggerli tutti. La stessa Scarlett che lo aveva rassicurato del fatto che non fosse colpa sua e che dovevano rimanere uniti, perché così si comporta una famiglia davanti alle difficoltà. Lei è certamente sconvolta da tutta una serie di fatti, ma questo non giustifica la sua reazione. Né le reazioni di tutti quanti, decisamente esagerate in merito alla rivelazione in sé e per sé. La famiglia dovrebbe esserci anche nel momento in cui si sbaglia, anche davanti agli errori e le decisioni sbagliate. Nel bene e nel male non vale solo per i matrimoni.In secondo luogo, una pecca che avevo riscontrato già nel primo libro, cioè la possibilità di empatizzare con i personaggi. Nonostante il miglioramento e l’approfondimento maggiore delle relazioni, nonostante la miglior introspezione dei personaggi, manca ancora qualcosa che permetta di immedesimarsi a fondo con tutti loro.Tutto considerato, l’ho trovato un libro divertente, pieno di azione, difficile da abbandonare. È la lettura perfetta per una persona che voglia leggere qualcosa di leggero, intrigante e, perché no, che ami i Guardiani della Galassia – non so voi, ma io sento tantissimo l’influenza dei film Marvel su questo gruppo di personaggi e su questo universo in generale, una cosa che mi piace tantissimo e che trovo una forza di questo libro.
