Countdown to the Movie Release (Review #515)
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is hitting theaters soon and with that coming up I wanted to read up on the character in the comics beforehand. I can't say I know much about the finer details of this character's early history but that's okay. This miniseries by Gene Luen Yang, which went on to launch an ongoing, appears to act as a sort of light reboot of the character. In spite of his best efforts, Shang-Chi cannot escape his father’s dark legacy when the cult of his childhood comes to take him back. Over the course of these five issues Yang has redefined Shang-Chi's past, present, and future. It's a great read to be sure. I always appreciate when a writer decides to add new things to a preexisting character's world rather than doing the same story over again. If I had one complaint, I do wish that Shang-Chi had been even more central to the plot but that's a small thing to consider. In comparison the artwork for the story is perfectly decent. Dike Ruan does the main parts while Philip Tan helps out on the flashbacks I believe. If the movie is anything like this comic then it's going to be pretty good. This is, in my opinion, the best way to prepare yourself for it.4/5

Loved it
A great introduction to the character, while also touching upon his comic book past. The art is phenomenal and very good story. I highly recommend it especially for those looking to learn a bit more about Shang Chi before the movie comes out.

Good entry point
Anything I’ve ever bought by Gene Luen Yang has been worth it and this was no exception. Highly recommended. This book collects a 5-issue miniseries and can be read like a standalone graphic novel. Perfect for new fans.

Family business
I liked this book. I was not blown away by it but I did enjoy it. Good artwork and a good story. I have always like Shang-Chi but I did feel he was a bit underused.Shang-Chi has tried his best to escape his fathers corrupting influence, not he is dragged back onto the family business with some some sibling wanting him dead other wanting him to accept his destiny. However is that a good thing? The series has enough action to keep me interested, but I did really like the story. I think ofvyge first volume is anything to go by it will make a very interesting series.
