What makes some photographs stay in the memory forever? Sometimes it’s the subject matter alone, but more often it’s the skill of the artists who took them. The premise of this magnificent book is quite simple: take 100 leading examples of the work of the world’s greatest photographers, and a distinguished academic will describe how they achieved their effects to allow you to recreate them yourself. Discover how to compose 'decisive moments' like Cartier-Bresson, use long exposures for landscapes like Simon Norfolk, and experiment with flash in daylight like Rineke Dijkstra. The images are arranged thematically, with engaging analysis of each image and a description of its technical make-up, along with a biography of each artist. The book showcases 100 of the greatest images in the history of the art and will provide an indispensable guide to the technicalities behind the well-known masterpieces and hidden gems in the world of photography. The photographers and their images were carefully selected by award winning photographer, educator and academic Paul Lowe, whose years of experience as a photojournalist and as a teacher gives unique and detailed insight into the working methods of these great image makers. Review: Hugely interesting and informative - A book packed with one example of the work of an enormous number and range of photographers. I read through it at a slow pace as each two- page spread on each photographer takes quite a bit of study. Along with a short biography of each photographer and a comments on his or her work, there is a section on creative tips and techniques. Some are pretty obvious, but others have given me lots of ideas for my own photography.

Toll

Factual Errors and Too Basic in Places
Within 10 minutes, I was turned off when I found factual errors. First, he describes Havana's famous restaurant as a "parador". The word he is look for to describe private restaurants in Cuba is "paladar". This is a very common term, and just plain sloppy for a photojournalist to not do the basic research on this. He also describes the photo as the photo as the "entrance hallway" to the restaurant. What we're looking at in the photo is the 2nd floor. This building has been photographed extensively. There is a large mural and fabulous staircase on the first floor, then the second floor (which is what we are looking at), and finally the restaurant on the third floor. So, this is in no way the "entrance hallway". Once again, just sloppy. A lot of the advice or insight into the photos is very basic, or not helpful. Plus, the overwhelming majority of these photos are taken by white men. Sure, they dominated for a long time, but some variety and fresh voices would be nice. This book has some interesting photos and commentary, but the factual errors and descriptions are just a turnoff overall.
