The sticker on the stool I just received states "country of origin: Malaysia"

what is the difference between the black and red models?

The color, that's all! (also, the price I suppose...)

Will it work on a carpet?

I have both of mine on carpet, however, I recommend another square of carpet or a small plastic sheet made for chairs on carpet in order to avoid the "smush" effect. I have a carpet square and it works perfectly to shield the primary carpet.

Does anyone use this for used for cello or double bass practice?

I don't but I think it would be a good one as it can move a little.
