Best anchor system I've used so far
First, i'll note these had a 4" helix, not 6" as the product description said.Had some 12' tall leyland cypresses that fell over during Hurricane Sandy (yes I now know, fast growing trees with shallow roots have a tendency to topple over...).I first put them back up with oak stakes but they wound up falling over again from this past winter's (2013-2014) heavy snow. The trees had grown a bit so they were taller and heavier than before. So being shallow rooted fast growing trees, in somewhat loose soil I needed to anchor them and try again. I first tried some plastic anchors purchased at Home Depot, but they were far too short and had almost zero holding power. So the search was on. I was a bit hesitant for paying almost $100 for a dozen of these but bit the bullet. The trees were now getting pretty heavy so I used two of these anchors per tree, which were pretty easy to sink into the ground. Just used a metal rod as a handle and screwed each anchor into the soil, no pounding with a sledge hammer. To upright the fallen trees by myself, I found the best method was to use a come along winch between the 2 rods, a pulley block and a tree saver winch strap. Put the strap fairly high up on the tree and ratcheted away. Once the tree stood upright, I then used Arbortie's webbing to support the tree. So far so good.I did manage to bend my first anchor by using a single anchor and the come along, placed fairly low on the tree, however even with it bent, they did not pull out of the ground. But after splitting the load between 2 anchors and putting the pulling strap higher for better leverage, I no longer had issues with it bending. That was quite a bit of force being exerted, so it impressed me by not pulling out.I ordered a 2nd set of 12 so I can straighten some other trees out and use them for other applications such as tent stakes or antenna guy wire anchors.I like how they are reusable too, but they are carbon steel, so they will eventually rust. I'll have to leave these in for at least a few more years to allow the tree roots to develop, so time will tell how they last, or if the webbing and anchors will survive a high wind situation.
