Does anyone feel like the white soles stand out to much?

I personally hate the look of white soles, except on white shoes. It's not a matter of white soles getting dirty, I just don't like the look. So of all the available colors, my only acceptable option is black. Disappointing. I'd like to see more colors with matching or maybe tan soles.

can these be machine washed?

Yes, but I only wash mine in cool or cold water and let them air dry....Definitely DO NOT put them in the dryer. They will shrink up! If they take a long time to dry and smell a little off, you can Febreze them inside and out. Also you should clean the soles with something like the Magic Eraser before you put them in the washer. Hope this helps.

Are the soles rubber or plastic?

They are rubber and very nice shoes. Run a little large .

Can you use orthodics in these shoes?

I use cork insole inserts in mine. These are the only shoes I wear so I took them with me to my Podiatrist and she showed me how to pull out the insole that comes in the shoe and put the cork inserts in and then just lay the insole back down. Don't pull it up all the way, my inserts are just half the length of the shoe. It works great so I've bought enough of the cork insoles to have them inserted into all my Sketchers, I own most of the colors now, love these shoes.
