HeartwarmingโฆA Bit SadโฆA Story of Family and Faith
This is the first of Dollyโs โCoat of Many Colorsโ movies. It is set in 1955. It explains how Dolly's โcoat of many colorsโ originated; it was a gift from her mother, who created a coat for Dolly out of a hand sewed blanket that was made for her baby brother. Young Dolly loves the coat until the kids made fun of her. In a way, the coat represents Dolly's faith and as she rejects the coat, she rejects her faith at the same time because she is angry at God for taking away her baby brother. She visits her brotherโs grave every night, even though sheโs afraid of the dark. Dolly's family is poor but very close knit and religious. Their love and faith is severely tested when Dollyโs baby brother was born prematurely and dies. Her mother, Avie Lee, cannot function because she is mired in depression after losing her baby. Dollyโs father struggles with his wifeโs depression and the possible loss of his tobacco crop. The family manages to pull together to save their tobacco crop. Refashioning the baby blanket into a coat of many colors is the start of Avie Leeโs healing. The film also shows how Dolly discovered her talent for music and her determination to become a star. One hilarious scene has the young Dolly experimenting with โmakeupโ that she improvised from household products and plant dyes. She appears in church with a garishly painted face, shocking the congregation. This movie is a bit sadder than her second film, which is more Christmas-themed, humorous and joyful. Itโs still a heartwarming story, great for family viewing with older children. The death of the baby brother that might be difficult for younger viewers.

Sweet movie!
I love Dolly and this is a lovely, sweet story. I grew up listening to her and watching her and Kenny Rogers on TV. In the early 80's when I was 12, we drove through Nashville when we were moving across the states. My father stopped at a place that had a big display on Dolly and her family and I was so excited to see everything - I was the only one in my family that loved country music, so I thought it was pretty special that my parents indulged me in this way. So yes, I am a big fan. My boys and I watched this movie last weekend and we all just loved it. It is so timeless and I have already shared it with a neighbor.

and the acting by everyone is excellent. The story shows how anything and everything can ...
This movie is incredibly touching, especially since it is a true story based on part of Dolly's own life. I cried in several places. I would have to say this movie is "food for the soul." It is very well made and engaging from the first to the last scene, and the acting by everyone is excellent. The story shows how anything and everything can be overcome. It is a message of hope, and the whole world would benefit from watching it. The first time I saw Dolly Parton was on "The Porter Wagner Show." Porter, (a long tall drink of water), was advertising Black Draught, which is a laxative, and I was cracking up. Then Dolly came out and explained the origin of her song, "Coat of Many Colors." I broke down and cried at this very personal and beautiful story she shared so sincerely with all of us viewers. Dolly, thank you for all your contributions to our world, for your authenticity, ambition, integrity and the example you set for everyone. You are the best! You are truly an Ambassador of Good Will to All. May God continue to Bless you. Hope
