If the cap is swallowed, the airway will not close off due to the holes. In regard to drying out, the holes are outside of the sealable cover so air will not touch the nib when the cap is on. **Q: Is there a trick to getting these to work for the first time? Not one in the 4 pack works.** A: Mine worked when I first used but then they did not work well at all.
