Crime and Punishment: A New Translation

This is the Crime and Punishment translation to have if you're having only one. I've read three others, the Oliver Ready on Penguin, the Nicolas Pasternak-Slater on Oxford, and the Pevear/Volokhonsky on Vintage. As good as the first one is, Katz blows it and the rest out of the water. Pasternak-Slater is a breezy, casual read, suitable perhaps for your second or third pass through the novel. As for the Pevear/Volokhonsky, I will let others speak for their brand of translation. Do an internet search on "pevearsion of russian literature gary saul morson" and you will see why Pevear/Volokhonsky should never be your first choice for this or any other Russian novel.

The quality is total trash, it is like newspaper, but still good and readable

A master piece that everyone should read once in their life, of course I am exaggerating, but I really liked it. The book arrived in perfect conditions, I have to add that I am not an English native speaker (as you might have noticed) but the book was not that heavy for me, I am saying it because if this may be the same case as you, the reader of this, I encourage you to read even if you think that your English is not that good, believe me (just look at this comment).

If you don't read Russian, which I don't, reading this translation of Crime and Punishment by Professor Katz is the closest you can get to the essential novel for a non-Russian speaker. In the past, I read C & P twice in the 19th Century translation by Constance Garnett. Mrs. Garnett brought Russian literature to the English speaking world and deserves praise for this. However, while she was fast translator, she wasn't the best. Her translations are awkward and made all the characters speak the same. Prof Katz has a vast knowledge of the Russian language and of Russian history and culture. His translation of C & P reads very well and the characters each have their own distinctive way of speaking as Dostoyevsky wrote for them. I'm familiar with the plot and characters, but Katz modernizes the language without losing any of the essential Russian character of the novel. This translation was a joy to read.
