Exceeded All Expectations
This is a great little scanner. And I do mean little; I was simply amazed at the small size of the unit. In fact, I have taken it on a couple road trips. In addition to the size, the fact that it only requires the USB cable is a real boon. Power is supplied via the USB port so I only needed one cable for power and signal. Too cool. And this worked perfectly with either the Mac G4 Cube or iceBook that I have. And despite what I had read, I found it to be realtively quiet. Certainly it is a vast improvement over my ancient Microtek unit. Incredibly portable, fairly rugged, great images -- it's just a real gem.The Software is also simple and pretty powerful. I love being able to start a scan by pressing the button on the scanner OR from within the software. That's hardware integration that works! With the included Photoshop LE, I was able to monkey around with some photographs and get just sterling results. The included OCR software is good, but I find that given its limited accuracy I am better off (read that as meaning that it is quicker with less input from me) just doing a quick scan of class notes and keeping them in that format.I knew that my old scanner was well past its prime, but I am pleasantly pleased at how much things have improved. I highly recommend this scanner.

Worst experience ever --- do not buy this scanner
In 30 years of dealing with electronics, this was my personal low point for an unsatisfactory experience. I purchased this new, and I spent parts of three days trying to get it to work and it never did. I subsequently came across another review posted here that refers to a loose USB connection on the back of the scanner and believe that is what I experienced. I returned it for a refund as quickly as I could and purchased an Epson Perfection 1240U, an absolute 5-star experience.

dumb instructions for installation
The sleek design and the high resolution of the scanner attracted me in the first place. But to my surprise, I had big, big troubles to install the device on my labtop which is running windows 98 first edition. It supposed to be plug and play, right? How come I will be so dumb unable to install the device? So the next day I tried my friend's laptop which happens to be running Windows 98 too. Well, It took me less than 5 minutes to setup the device driver, and get it functional. But back to my own home, I still had same problem to set it up. I tried install the hardware manually through the control panel, selecting the "have disk" option, or the "browse" option, but the installation process keeps telling me "no compatible driver was found" on the installation CD-ROM. The installation instructions that comes with the box were so simple, that it tells you nothing except to unplug the device to do the reinstall. The menu said black and white that the scanner supports Windows 98. Later on I realized that my firend's laptop is running Windows 98 Second Edition, while mines is only the first release of Win 98! This made the whole difference! I tried to download from Canon website. The results were the same. Finally I had the conclusion that the device driver is NOT compatible with Win 98 first edition. At that time, I had wasted a whole week of my leisure time! Not to mention I had to return the item ...

trying to resurrect! done
I have 2 MFPs, one with a flat bed, the other with a sheet feeder/fax scanner, but the printer drivers have gone south, so on my Desktop, which still runs XP in contrast to my Lappy with Win7, I am trying to set up this scanner for a past eBay sale, which I neglected to supply some documentation. At this point I am just trying to recall my experiences with the scanner. It was pricey when I bought it at about one hundred seventy dollars at the membership club based near Seattle. The software it came with was fairly extensive compared to the Microtec parallel based scanner I used previous, but this last one retailed for less than seventy dollars. The lid is supremely dented, I don't think it is aluminum like my Acer lappy, but is painted but thin stainless steel. I recall hardly ever using it because the setup process in a very cramped area for a standalone scanner didn't seem to make worth it. However, the few scans I did make seemed pretty good. An interesting feature is a "lock" to prevent movement of the element.====hey, it still works...that is on an XP media center pc with sp3, the software is too clunky...it is super slow...i think it is still usb 1.1 with a slow movement of the element or platen, not too bad for a 10 y.o. purchaseAfter I reset up this scanner I will report my experiences!

some problems
having nothing but trouble trying to scan black and white or text, skimpy instruction sheet is of no help. have talked to two Canon tech people who act like they never saw a scanner. Basically a nice rig if I could get my problems solved.

Old but gold
Someone's gonna notice the 15-year gap of these reviews with this one.I figure scanners hardly have improved over the years, so I should just get an ancient one as it's cheaper and modern PC peripherals that deal with paper tend to break down or throw errors to nudge them to simply buy a newer, "better" machine. I scanned a color comic as a test and boy did it look like I was just reading off the pages, but on my monitor! But alas! There's no drivers for Windows 8 (my OS) and very likely for Windows 10. I just used VirtualBox to run a Windows XP instance, the fossilized software works perfectly fine, thank you Canon for still hosting old software. My seller had it like-new, with the box, no software disk but that's what the internet is for.
