Red Fox The Lion And The Unicorn

Extremely well received
I was nervous about this book as I thought the content may be beyond my SEN class (aged 8-11 but working at lower levels). However, they LOVED it. The war theme engaged many, and the idea of unicorns kept the rest hooked! They recently went on a school trip to Covent Garden and found not one, but three, Lion & Unicorn emblems. The adorable yells of "Miss! Lion and Unicorn!" showed just how much they had taken in from the story. They retold the story in class and at home with detail and sensitivity. Lots of opportunity for cross-curricular learning too - discussion of religious practises in not eating pork, lots of history and plenty of empathy in PSHE.

Evocative and beautifully illustrated!
Absolutely brilliant and memorable book. Shirley Hughes never disappoints. A wonderful book showing how the war affects children on the Home Front in Britain, from the bombings, life as an evacuee, homesickness bravery and the forming of a mutually healing relationship with an amputee soldier. Wolnderful stuff.

I recommend the book as an excellent educational resource that has ...
The concepts, illustrations and historical research within this book are well thought through. One could place themselves in the role of each of the characters and simply see the story for what it is... A timeless explanation of familial relationships, experiences and solutions. Readers should however be aware that the text may require them to provide additional discussion for the younger reader as the content could be misinterpted. Overall, I recommend the book as an excellent educational resource that has the aptitude to be used to explain a wide range of subject matter.

resources for teaching about world war 2
the story is easily accessible for all children, illustrations are beautiful and the content provides lots of chances for discussion with upper key stage 2 children. we used the book as a stimulus for Philosophy for kids and it was very successful and led to some in-depth discussion. It's useful if there is a story synopsis and intended audience age when looking to purchase; I bought this book simply because of subject matter and knowledgeof the author.
