Great little window sensors
These are great little sensors for windows. We have them on 6 windows in our sunroom. Here are the pros and cons and it is what it is facts about them.it is what it is:1. these are rechargeable. They come with a short usb cable and when the battery runs down you slip the unit off of it's mounting bracket and recharge it. Recharging takes maybe and hour or so. I honestly haven't timed it. I usually just plug it in, go do something and when I come back, it's charged.2. Battery life between charges is directly proportional to how often you open/close the window.3. They mount in a corner of your window and determine whether the window is open or not based on how close it is to a magnet mounted to the window.4. The units mount to a mounting base attached to the window. It just slides on and you are ready to go. This makes it very easy to take the unit off for charging since you don't have to take off the mounting bracket.Pros:1. After 2 years, they are still working. You can't say that about some things today, but these seem to be pretty steady.2. They notify your zwave hub when their battery is low.3. Recharging is easy.4. they are pretty small and are up and out of the way on my windows. We keep the window blinds up almost all the way and you still can't see these on our large vertical windows.5. on our horizontal windows, they sit just up above the cross bar, and when the window blinds are up , you really don't notice it.Cons:1. Positioning the magnet can be a pain getting it just right. If the magnet is just on the verge of being recognized, the window may not physically close all the way so it gives you a open notification. If your window expands and contracts during the changing season, if your battery is just on the edge of being noticed, it may not bee recognized when the season changes and your window expands or contracts a little.2. I will never be happy with the speed of my devices until they do things before I actually realize I want them done and notify me of things immediately. These don't take a long time to notify you of a change in status, but they do take a few seconds. I hesitated to put this one down, because compared to some things, it's really good.Nice to have:Since these are on your window, it would be nice if they charged by solar? You could have a small solar panel in the mounting bracket and when you attach the unit, it trickle charges all day. It's not like they use a lot of power.

Great Aesthetics But It Stops There.
Aeon Labs Z-wave Door / Window Sensor 6 ZW112-A with rechargeable battery. If you're looking to buy this sensor, just know that the only thing that sets it apart from other sensors is the aesthetics. It's slick looking and when mounted on a sliding glass door, you probably won't even notice it. Or you can paint it, which is awesome. But for us, we wanted more. It didn't feel like the description was very clear in what it did and did not do. Basically, it only reports open or close. No other bells and whistles. If that's all you are looking for and aesthetics is a high priority, this is perfect. I can see this being useful if you are renting or don't want to drill in recessed door sensors. I also didn't find the range very good for our situation. For a bit of context, we live in 3500 sqft home in a suburban area of Los Angeles. Range on any kind of smart product will vary based on the distance the product is from your hub and amount of interference surrounding you, such as walls, wireless routers, microwaves, cell phones, etc. We have 4 other smart devices in our home that can act as repeaters, though only 2 of them are Z-wave enabled (more devices purchasing this week!). When I first set up these Aeon sensors, the range to my hub worked great, but I realized that had not enabled it for encrypted messaging. So I did a factory reset and tried again. Since then and after multiple factory resets, the range was never as good. My Smart Things Hub was upstairs in the SE corner of my house, with these door sensors located downstairs on the NW sliding patio doors. I moved my hub to the middle of the house (even to the middle of the staircase) to get improved performance but there was still a bit of a lag when reporting its status to my hub. For comparison, I also have the Smart Things Multi-Purpose Sensor and they responded perfectly with the hub in the far side of the house. So, I am returning them. They look great but not great enough for me to keep them. The range doesn't work for my house, and for the price point, it just doesn't justify itself.

My favorite door/window sensor
I've been through a number of door/window and other sensors over the years. This has been one of my favorites. It installed easily, included easily, is reliable, and has been used by various automations on several types of Z-Wave hubs. But most of all I love this sensor because it is easy to remove and recharge. Every 3-6 months, I plug it in for an hour or so, then put it back in place. Brilliant.I am currently expanding my set of door/windows sensors, and am rethinking the project because this sensor is not available. My other sensors cause me to burn through boxes of a variety of different battery types, and I have to take down, open up, and replace batteries on one of them every week.
