Yes, there is a flame, but I wouldn't use this to directly cook s'mores. Think the food would taste like the fuel. Doesn't seem healthy to me.

Depends on how much water and how much product is being used. I use it for fondue and it easily keeps a pot of cheese bubbling. Seems pretty hot.
