Poignant story of a family and their bravery in Kabul under the Taliban rule
This is a beautifully illustrated book about a young girl called Parvana and her brave journey to save her family during the Taliban rule. She draws strength from the fictitious story she weaves for her little brother. It is extremely poignant and wonderful for young readers. I bought this for my seven year old to help her understand the current struggles of the Afghan people. We loved the book and then went onto watch the movie. I highly recommend it.

Follows the film
This graphic novel follows the plot of the film of the same name. It has differences with the original book. I used it as a supplementary book for students who needed extra support in my ELA class.

Great for kids when discussions are included.
I read this comic book for my grade 5/6 students last semester because they would not have been interested in the chapter book version. Text is great and pictures are vivid. Some challenging topics come up so make sure you have discussions about the impact of war and religion and women and men all over the world.

Well done, and will attract those who wouldn't tackle pages of solid print. Personally I prefer the original creation by Deborah Ellis for its more fully developed characters and storyline, but this has attracted teens in our church library.
