New York City 1975. The city is teetering on bankruptcy, mere months away from President Ford's infamous "Drop dead" speech. And over 100,000 well-lubricated fans attend a free concert by Jefferson Starship in Central Park. What could go wrong?Actually, unless you were a tree, not much (a constant theme of the concert is threats by the police and park staff to shut down the show unless fans get out of the trees, and the Starship and the concert sponsor, WNEW-FM, had to pony up for park repairs after the event). This is the Starship on the eve of the release of Red Octopus, mere months away from ascending commercial heights never attained by the Airplane, and the band is absolutely on fire there s a reason this concert ranks among the most treasured bootlegs in Airplane or Starship tape collector circles. And speaking of tape collectors, for this first-ever legitimate release we have worked with a tape provided by the band and filled in some gaps (including the long-lost ending of "Volunteers") with recordings contributed by collectors to present the complete show on two CDs mastered by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios (minus some of the incessant exhortations to get out of the trees). The material ranges from songs off of their debut Dragonfly ("Ride the Tiger," "Caroline") to tunes from the forthcoming Red Octopus ("Play on Love," "Fast Buck Freddie" ) to Airplane faves "White Rabbit," "Somebody to Love" and "Volunteers," performed by the early Starship line-up of Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Marty Balin, David Freiberg, Craig Chaquico, Pete Sears, John Barbata and Papa John Creach. The Kantner-Slick-Balin vocal dynamics have rarely been better than on this recording, and guitarist Chaquico particularly shines; it being the '70s, there are also long drum and bass solos and a bit of the anarchic spirit of mid-'70s New York City seeps into the show as well. The scene is captured by professional photographer Allan Tannenbaum (photographer/author of New York in the '70s), who was at the gig and supplies photos (including the cover shot) for this collection, while Richie Unterberger's notes featuring exclusive quotes from Starship pilot Paul Kantner set the stage for the Starship playing the biggest gig imaginable. Review: Live on wnew fm, free show in central park! - I was at this free show which supported the dragonfly album. There was also a free show the following spring for red octopus. The band was grace, paul, marty, papa john creach, david freiberg, pete sears, john barbata and craig chaqico on lead guitar. The outlaws came out and opened the show. Green grass and high tides was great! These shows were both broadcast live on wnew fm, which is most likely the source for this cd set. I have the bootlegs of both shows. This recording matches the boot very closely. The sound is good fm radio quality. If you want to listen to a show and feel like you are there, with any imperfections although slight, included, buy this set. If you insist on a overdubbed, slick, polished, boring , fake live set, pass. Review: Sorry, this Jefferson Starship concert should have stayed a bootleg. - I am a big Jefferson Starship fan (up until Earth) and always liked how rough they sounded live. This is one band that always sounded better in the studio. Live, they were just all over the place. Some call this their "greatest' concert. It is back when they were actually getting along (would love to see this on video!) and some of their best work was Dragonfly, Red Octypus, and Spitfire. This is still worth having as a collectable, but the sound on this CD is distorted and recorded WAY TOO LOUD. I can barely handle thirty minutes of it. Barely turn it up and IT'S TOO LOUD. Maybe that's what people expect, but I want to control the master volume and not let the mixers control it. This is shocking in itself that this is from RCA label. They should have toned it down MANY decibles for my liking. Maybe now that I am older, I don't need it that LOUD. It's like figernails going down the chalk board. Let me know other audiophiles. Am I right on this? I know the die-hard fanboys will be more forgiving, but this fan has waited too many years for this to be released when the mixers botched it. Let me know what you think. Also on my receiver I turn the volume down to -65 and it is still too LOUD. What is up?

Starship fans will celebrate!
Great release for fans of Starship and 70s music in general. Very spirited vocals and musicianship; Grace Slick shines throughout. I hope more live Starship becomes available, especially tours in the later 1970s reflecting Spitfire and Earth (underappreciated great cd) tours. Amazon as usual shipped item quickly to this loyal music customer. Some comical moments regarding the fans in the trees add to the feeling of being present at the show. Drum solo is one of the better ones of this era that I have heard. Overall rating of 4.75 rounded up to 5 star.

Best version of Jefferson Starship
Best version of Jefferson Starship! This is what they sounded like on a good day. The tape is very good for what it is The tape is what it is. Do not expect a professional recording g intended for commercial release. Like a good Grateful Dead live release with warts and all.

Essential release but lacking a bit in quality
I was expecting a bit more from this line-up. The performance was sloppy overall and the sound quality is just adequate. It seems as if the band were not that well rehearsed, given the large audience. However, live Starship recordings from this era are pretty rare so fans should appreciate the importance of this release, particularly the participation of Papa John Creach.

I was there
May of '75 , three of us hitch hiked to NYC We skipped school in lower Westchester NY We got to Central Park and it was beautiful. The crowd was amazing and the weather that day was perfect. Our hair was long and the day to short. The Starship came out and delivers quite a good show. I notice that Airplane fans love the cd and Starship fans have reservations , just goes to show you..... Also seen them in Golden Gate Park SF IN @"78 , and the Capital Theater in Port Chester NY in 1970 as the Airplane... Yes I am a Jefferson Airplane fan......!!!

Poor Quality All The Way 'Round
I bought this 2 cd set based on the fact that I love "Red Octopus" and quite a bit of the Jefferson Airplane. I expected this set to sound like the 3 cuts as a bonus on "Red Octopus" sound from Winterland November 1975. Those 3 cuts are terrific, the band is in fine form and mixing is just about perfect. This recording sounds like it was recorded at the bottom of a well and as another reviewer astutley observes it is distorted and loudly compressed. In short it is a mess, there is virtually no post recording production done here, it could use a remix or if source tapes are not in existance at the very least they should have EQ'd the concert to bring out the high end and some warmth to the recording. I'm not sure who recorded this set for the radio, but I have many King Biscuit Flour Hour Broadcasts from the 70's by such artists as Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, The Records, Squeeze, The Pretenders to name a few, all of them I taped with a high quality cassette recorder from back in the day and all of them have a clarity and definition of instruments that this CD sorely lacks. Huge dissapointment, complete waste of money.

No pre-recorded music here.
This is a very good live concert of a band that was so diverse. The songs had meaning back then. They didnt write about bad boyfriends or material possessions. I think that is why they have held my attention for so many years.

I write this with great bias.....I have been an Airplane/Starship fan since I first saw them at a free show with The Dead in '67.I have seen the band many times and in all of their incarnations. Is this their best live work? No,but it is a very good indication of what was to come. This was widely available as bootleg, so it is nice to have it released with better sound. You get a real sense of the vocal interplay of Slick,Balin & Kantner, although Kantner often gets lost in the mix.The musicianship of bassist/keyboard player Pete Sears and lead guitarist Craig Chaquico adds greatly to what was to become the sound of the band.It would be great to see releases of later tours as the band just gets better with each outing.

Well I hate to be the odd one out here but for me this CD sounds great , considering that it's 40 years old and was a radio broadcast I've got no complaints. It's not PERFECT but the Band are really on fire , some great playing and Grace sounds wonderful. If your a Airplane / Starship fan then go for it……………oh and PLAY IT LOUD.

rubbish sound of a great gig

One star dropped due to its less than perfect quality, but otherwise the Starship at their best.

This sounds like it was taken from an old radio broadcast and the sound is not very good, but adequate. Sadly there is virtually no live material available of vintage Starship, so this will have to do. I hope the band will rectify this one day.
