The title is ironic but underscores the simple truth that the essential elements of both tango and jazz are passion and swing. It is natural therefore that tango meets jazz. Pablo Ziegler performed with the Astor Piazzola Quintet for eleven years, touring the world and making many acclaimed albums. Ettore Stratta and Pat Philips - the producers of this album - met Pablo at a session in Buenos Aires. Later they decided to place Pablo at the center of a TangoJazz project - putting on concerts where the he could play with America's top jazz musicians. Musicians such as Stefon Harris, one of the US's finest vibraphone players and a founding member of The Classical Jazz Quartet. That concert in New York was recorded for Kind of Blue.A unique evening of passion, fire and Swing.

An Interesting Twist
To long-time enthusiasts of Tango Nuevo, most cuts on this excellent live CD will be very familiar. Yet it comes with an interesting twist: for this performance in New York, Pablo Ziegler has invited American vibraphonist Stefon Harris to join them, hence the title Tango & All That Jazz. You probably already expect to hear great virtuosity from Ziegler and you do, but Harris brings it in spades, adding a new dimension and sounding like he has been playing this kind of music his entire life. My favorite cuts are the old Astor Piazzolla standard La Muerte del Angel, the now-standard Ziegler composition Milonga en el Viento, the manic Michelangelo '70, Ziegler's Once Again...Milonga, the mellow Muchacha del Boedo, and the complex La Cumparsola. If you have enjoyed other excursions with Ziegler's music, you are almost sure to enjoy this. The CD is attractively packaged and is accompanied by a useful booklet containing album information, some pictures, and a short blurb on this project by the producer. Check it out, you'll be glad you did!
