Q: What is the best 1) grind for the beans for this device; and 2) what is the best filter size?

A trick is to use "8-12" sized basket filters instead of #2 cone filters because its much cheaper to buy, also double filter to make the coffee stronger, simply pressing the basket in shapes it to a cone well enough.Basket filters are several times cheaper to buy.

Q: difference twixt this and the ready set joe cone?

I believe they are the same. The possible difference might be that these have 1 hole that drains slow enough to let the brew steep, yet still very fast. These are great! I've used them for years and this is the latest version and it is a good improvement. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Q: Is there anything on the bottom (ridges, etc.) that will hold it in place on a travel cup? Or could it slide or get knocked off easily?

Yes, there are small ridges on the bottom that allow it to fit on all my travel cups, but you do have to be careful not to bump it or move the cup since it is lightweight and could be knocked off fairly easily. Once I make the coffee, I dump the filter in the trash, rinse it with water, and I am done! It is my favorite way to make coffee for one person!

Q: is the plastic bpa free

Usually modern plastics have a tiny triangle embedded in the plastic. Inside that triangle is a number which identifies the type of plastic. If the number is 1, 2, 4 or 5, it is considered safe for use with food and drink. Ie., BPA free.
