アイルランドのど田舎で住民が数十人の村で高額ロトの当選者が出たとの新聞発表があり、当選者はいったい誰かと？当選者探しが始まります。すると。。。。。あとは見てのお楽しみということで。製作費は３００万ドルらしいのでB,C級の扱いとなるでしょうが、５，５００万ドルの興行収入があったそうです。一応この作品はコメディに分類されるみたいですが、自分の場合は民主主義やその手順を考えさせらる作品です。１０数年前にテレビで見て、また見たくなったので買いました。DVD情報；リージョン１、音声；英語、字幕；英語、スペイン語、画面サイズ；シネラマ見たく横長で上下がカットされます。画質；良好の部類です。

Life-long pals Jackie O'Shea(Ian Bannen) and Michael Sullivan(David Kelly) discover that the winning ticket on the Irish national lottery, was bought in the small village where they live. After some fruitless attempts to find out which local purchased the winning ticket, Jackie calls round to see his friend-Ned Devine, and finds him dead in his armchair, holding the lotto winning ticket-apparently the shock of scooping the jackpot, killed him. That night Jackie has a dream where Ned hints that he wants to share his new-found wealth. The following day, Jackie and Michael hatch a plot to claim the winnings for themselves. But their plan spins out of control. First of all, Jackie's plan to pose as Ned, backfires when lottery executive Jim Kelly arrives in their small town, to verify the winning ticket, and now the more naive Michael Sullivan has to pose as Ned(leading to a hilarious scene where he has to race to Ned's home, whilst naked on a motorbike). Then the two protagonists are shocked to find out that the jackpot comes to almost seven million euros. Realising that they are in over their heads, they get all of the townsfolk involved in this scheme. They are all delighted to claim a share of Ned's jackpot, except for local battleaxe Lizzy Quinn(aka "The Witch"), who tries to blackmail them, for a greater share of the winnings.Waking Ned, is a funny, charming and thoroughly entertaining picture, featuring plenty of outstanding British and Irish acting talent. Perhaps the most surprising thing about Waking Ned is that despite the fact that is oozes Irish charm, it was actually filmed on the Isle of Man. A superb film, that will appeal to people of all ages, and all tastes.

A good natured romp. The plot was not thought through, as the ending assumes that the villagers were defrauding the lottery when in fact Ned must have been alive when he won the big prize, which means that his estate held the winnings and if he died intestate with no claimants then the money would have gone to the state. Still - ignore that and enjoy the greedy woman getting her comeuppance. The filming was clearly done on the Isle of Man - beautiful scenery. NOTE for the hard of hearing - beware - on the German Blu-ray, the sub-titles are in German ONLY and the English sound-track is not that great in parts.
