Catherine the Great: An HBO Limited Series

I fist saw this excellent mini-series on TV many years ago. It traces the life, struggles, and rise to power of Catherine The Great, one of the most important rulers in the history of Russia. I was very happy to find it available on DVD from Amazon.

Excellent book and beautiful vintage photos.

Catherine is not a tale to be told in two hours. Interesting story, not sure how much is true, but great cast.

Only reason I bought this DVD was Helen Mirren. Having said this, I do not think this role suited her. I had recently purchased Young Catherine, which was wonderful. The actor who played Catherine's husband in that was also the one who played Catherine's grown son in the version with Helen Mirren. I know Catherine was known for taking many lovers, but it was off putting to watch her taking very young men to her bed who were her son's age. TMI! I do acknowledge that in that day and age, it was a way to get a better position at Court. She comes off to me as oversexed. The biography I read about her only focused on the 2 great loves of her life. In terms of production costs and scenes that could have been left out w/o changing the overall value of the story, the studio could have saved tons of money.

I really did not know. History is taught in a way that it becomes meaningless. This is a wonderful miniseries that will make it clear what she did for Russia. Without her achievements Napoleon would easily have won Russia for himself or for one of his relatives. The series is beautiful with great acting and beautiful settings.

Limited series was wonderful! Learned allot about Cathrine the Great, Helen Mirren is stellar as always! Packaging was secure, delivered on time, & quality blu-ray was perfect.

Expected more, was not impressive. Especially with Helen Miriam as lead, you expect better. She was good, story wasn't noteworthy

Wow factor? This had it, great acting, massive sets so lavish you can smell the polish on the floors! Beautiful costumes with seemingly no expense spared, an emotional roller coaster with Mirren at the centre of it all. Brilliant all round entertainment.

Catherine est un personnage mal connue en France.Comme toujours Helen Miren est remarquable.Pour l'actualité cette histoire permet de comprendre que la Crimée n'a jamais été ukrainienne mais Ottomane avant de devenir russe.
