Exit: The brilliantly funny new crime novel from the Sunday Times bestselling author of SNAP

This book twists and turns and is not really a crime novel.
I have been reading books by Belinda for years now. They never disappoint and this is no exception. I would say that this is the best one since her debut. Yes, it is primary a crime novel however, it is so much more as well. This is full of real people with real lives and emotions. It contains people who believe in support for people with terminal illness who don't want to carry on in a very positive way that I personally support. That of course won't suit everybody but it really resonates with me. My only problem to be honest is with the long wait since the last one. I'm not known for being very patient so, please get a move on.

Good in parts
I enjoyed Snap very much so was looking forward to reading Exit, but unfortunately, it wasn’t as good a read as I’d anticipated. It’s more of a cosy village-type mystery than Snap and started well but then the story dragged. The blurb describes the humour as hilarious but I felt that droll would be a better word. The main character, Felix, was engaging and provoked thoughts about ageing and loss which the author explored in some detail, but when other characters were slotted in, they were only sketchily developed in a way that became irritating. My curiosity about what was going to happen evaporated and I almost gave up. I don’t like to abandon a book halfway, however, so I persevered and ultimately was glad I had as the pace improved and the ending wrapped everything up in a satisfying fashion even though it required a bit of a stretch of credulity. All the same, I can only give this one three stars.

Another fantastic read from a fantastic author.
Another great read from Belinda Bauer. Not at all what I was expecting and actually a bit of a welcome break from the typical crime novels. Still as captivating but a more human story than other whodunnits.

Wonderful
Another lovely read by this talented lady. I love her books. Funny, clever, enthralling. She writes with warmth and understanding- even the villainous characters are almost likeable. Great. Highly recommend.

Even better than the last excellent one.
Belinda Bauer gets better with every book. I started last year with Snap, read another (Blacklands) and pre-ordered Exit. I have just finishes it and thoroughly enjoyed it. I love her humour and characterisation; the plotting too, is superior even if it was very neatly tied up at the end. She has a warm eye for the human condition that did cause me to shed a tear as I finished this. I will not elaborate upon the plot as others have done this very competently. Although not from north Devon, I am a Devonian by birth and did enjoy reading about East-the Water in Bideford as I briefly attended East the Water Primary school a very long time ago! I will have the delights of reading through her back catalogue which I am anticipating with pleasure. She is now on my list of favourites and I am only sorry that I read this latest so quickly.

OK but research and care needed....
I've read several of Bauers' books. Several of them have the same characters, but nowhere have I seen any information about which order to read the books. It can be confusing to have a character die, then appear alive in the next book you read. In general, the book is well written with no (?) typos. However, page 190 mentions a "silicone transistor". Silicone transistors don't work and are as useful as silicon breast implants. Also, there is mention of a Mrs Max having a brother Leonard Max. Either an enormous coincidence, or the author hasn't thought about it. Applications to join the police require information about relatives, so it wouldn't be possible for the police to be unaware of Bridge's dubious family. And the use of the non-word "snuck" lets the author down badly.

Absolute most enjoyable book I've read for a long time!
I was completely unfamiliar with this author when I came across a recommendation online. There was so much I enjoyed about this book, that I don't know where to start! If it were a movie, this story would be described as a "romp" - for me, this is usually a turn-off, as romps often end up being lightweight fluff, and star Hugh Grant <<groan>>. Occasionally, a romp turns out to be a well-crafted story with an intellectually stimulating mystery at its heart, with engaging characters, and a bit of HUMOUR interspersed. Exit is such a "romp". ;-)I enjoy mysteries, and the plot of this book matches, or exceeds, the ingenuity of the best mysteries I've read in the past few years (I read about one book every 1-2 weeks). The twists and turns aren't too silly, or confusingly labyrinthine. Yes, there are a few unlikely coincidences, but they don't spoil the overall plausibility of the story - and humorous stories should have a bit of an unlikely plot, I think. The characters - good and bad - resonate, and the central theme (assisted dying) also provides some interesting, thought-provoking questions. The end of the story is wonderful, and not mawkish (no spoilers, but there are several plot lines that are wrapped up towards the end, and the final one was, for me, the biggest but most pleasant [in a strange way - read the book to find out why!] surprise.)Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it isn't the debut novel of a new writer - so there are more books! I really cannot wait to read them.

Awesome read
Absolutely loved this book. Some great characters, some excellent humour, the plot twists and there is a hint of the unexpected. Cracking plot. One of my favourites.
