does it work in waste oil tanks?

It is compatible with new oil. However things to keep in mind are that used oil collection tanks are filled with contaminated oil that could have moisture/water suspended in the oil that would throw off your readings. So it will not work as well in used oil storage.

I understand how to use to test for water... but I am looking for details on the statement "Accurately detects phase separation in ethanol"?

Accepted Answer

Water can dissolve in a 10% ethanol/ gasoline mixture from about 0.04 to 0.06 percent.  Above that limit, the water and ethanol mixture will collect in the bottom of the tank.  The water and ethanol mixture can be hard to detect so use cut paste that is designed to detect water in ethanol.  I put it on the bottom of the stick, graduated pole, and leave it in the tank for five minutes.  Usually, water level will show up as a transition from pink to tan.  I usually deal with diesel so I can use the cheap stuff.  Look at EPA.gov for further information.

affected by outside humidity? can i use to determine if my lot flooded with a rain protected stick?

Accepted Answer

The water cut paste is used to determine water level in underground and above ground tanks.  It changes to red if exposed to water and we leave it in the tank for 15 minutes or so.  We do not leave it exposed to humidity so I really don't know the answer.

If this item gets on clothing does it come out?

Accepted Answer

Yes....  If Gasoila gets on clothing it certainly comes out, but it's best to deal with it sooner than later.  The paste is like clay when it hardens so it will get more difficult to remove as it hardens.  In general one shouldn't have too much of a problem and the product works well for its purpose.
