FAT RAT REVIEW I recently asked my friends to help me decide between replacing my broken Rat ii with another Rat ii, or upgrade to the Fat Rat. The Fat Rat won. I ordered it, got it, played it, and here are my thoughts. (It's amazing!) The chassis is larger than the original, so that might be the only negative aspect for some people. I had space on my board, so no problem for me. The Rat sound is iconic, and I love it on my board. I wondered if I'd miss the original sound. Bonus: I can have an OG Rat pedal by leaving it in stock positions both ways. Win. The Fat mode opens the bottom end, especially in 18v. Win! (I play through a clean Marshall valvestate, and stereo to a Crate Bass amp.) The 18v (as opposed to the optional 9v) also helped deliver more crunch, so HUGE win. (I use the MXR iso brick for power that offers both options.) If you're not supplying 18v, you're missing out! For my ears, I don't hear a huge difference between stock and mosfet, so that's a wash. My friends insist that the mosfet option smooths the sound out, but I preferred the gritty highs of the original sound - and the 18v makes it extra crispy. After adjusting the settings to my taste, I landed at: -Distortion: 12 o'clock -Filter: 8 o'clock -Volume: 1 o'clock -Fat mode (left side) -Stock mode (right side) Extra bonus: was when I stacked this with my Boss BD-2. It was amazingly HUGE and chuggy!! Big win.(I didn't have this experience with my Rat ii.) Is it worth $100 more? I think so. I like it a lot better than the Rat ii.

It's so easy to use, less physical labor, high responses to touch, so less time to operate and more time to concentrate on the progression, pleasant sound output and so many more.

I love this. It's not expensive, and it covers everything from mild drive to fuzz to boost. The amount of gain is nuts, and the tone (filter) is SO powerful. It's perfect, but probably not for modern metal because it's not tight enough in the extremes. Only negative is it has big feet, so you have to build up layers of velcro, unless you take the feet off. Amazing pedal!
