Q: Will the DCT 4000 pump be enough for a 100 gallon fresh water with a 20 gallon sump, any info would be appreciated.

I do not agree with the other answers, but it would depend on your drain setup. I have a 120gallon reef tank, plumbed with a herbie style drain. (1 1" full syphon & 1 1" emergency drain. I purchased the dct8000 and am returning it because it was not strong enough. I run a manifold off my return pump to control 2 media reactors, and the 8000 while being OK for the main return was no where near where I expected it to be. It pushed only slightly more water than my eheim 1262. If I were you I would go at least a 6000, and would lean more towards the 8000 depending on the drain setup. Even running a simple durso I would recommend the 6000.

The manufacturer clearly says it needs to be submerged and the reason is pretty simple. The larger ones (12000 or 15000) dissipate use upwards of 100W of power. The surrounding water is used to keep the pump cool. Running the larger ones out of water will lead to a short and possibly smoky life.

Drill a small hole in your return pipe just below the (when running) water surface. When the pump stops, air will go into hole and stop siphon.

Yes it is mag drive and it has a ceramic shaft I am loving this pump and I am a big fan of their powerheads too.
