how do i know for sure this isnt a knock off?

It's not a knock off, at least the one I recieved wasn't... it works great, it doesn't feel cheap, and it's a good price. Probably one of the best hair styling products I've ever bought.

Is the size of the barrel 1/2 inch to 1 inch or 1 inch throughout?

I would say 1/2 in to 1 in. It's wider at the base. Great product!

does it come with the glove?

Yes, mine did come with a glove. Great styler for the price.

does this create tight curls as well?

It depends on how long you leave the iron in your hair. Honestly if your looking for SUPER tight curls you should get the Baby Curls instead of the Grande but I think the Grande does a great job with looser waves and tighter more defined curls depending on how long you leave it in. I'd say 5-10 seconds would be pretty loose and 15-20 seconds would be tighter and defined.
