An enjoyable reading.
If you haven't heard about Ayn Rand, the author of "Atlas Shrugged" and "The Fountainhead", nor read any of her works, start with this tiny short novel. The story is set in an unprecised future, in which society is shred among cities ruled by communist-like governments: every form of egoism is strictly forbidden and free will is banished as well. The protagonist (Equality 7- 2521) writes a diary about his life and the events that led him to flee from the city in search of freedom. Even though the novel is just a prelude to Atlas Shrugged, it conveys the ideas that made Ayn Rand an important liberal philosopher and it has the great advantage of concision. Start with it, then I bet you will consider reading Atlas Shrugged too.
