i read reports on shorter battery life with nvme drives and these adaptors for macbook. Is this true? is there a fix?

There is a hibernation issue with some 2013 and 2014 Macbooks. You have to disable hibernation. With that being said, I just upgrade the HD from SSD to NVME on a mid-2014 Macbook Pro and did not have the hibernation issue.
