Q: Can you use this for ironing, like for quilting piecing?

Yes!! I purchased it for iron the masks that I make!! It’s great!!

Q: Do you put material on top of this then the iron?

Yes, but honestly I found it to be too soft/Spongey for my purposes. I prefer a harder surface so ended up buying a larger heatpress instead of using this with my handheld press.

Q: What do you put the mat on? I tried using it on my wood-top kitchen table. The heat went through the mat to the table, leaving it warm & damp.

I've never had a problem with the heat going through it that I can recall. I use a Cricut heat press while in my craft room so my heat mat sits on top of a self-healing cutting mat. I also have other heat mats that are covered with Teflon and I find myself using those more than this one. I sit my Cricut heat press in it's cradle tray which sits on this mat to help protect my plastic table cloth.
