Warning - Frank poop talk
When we adopted Charlie and Lola a year ago they'd been eating Purina Dog Chow :(. Poop was okay but Charlie had 2 inch long strings of goop hanging from his eyes each morning. I switched them to a premium grain free food but that was too rich and their stools got very soft. After that I found two premium dry foods, with grains, that they did okay on, and have rotated between them - Lola's output was usually firm, Charlie's was formed but soft - and I concluded that was as good as it would get. Then last month I heard about the pea/taurine concern and discovered both brands had peas among the top five ingredients, even though they're not grain free. Perhaps I should mention here that we lost our last dog to inflammatory bowel disease at 6 years old, after two years of experimental diets, home cooking, and expensive medications. Despite our efforts, we'll always feel like we failed her, and I'll forever be obsessed with dog food ingredients and poop quality. Even though the FDA recommendation was to watch and wait, my conscience wouldn't let me keep them on a high pea diet. So, I did a lot of research and found Nature's Logic. We transitioned them over 5 days and they've been on it exclusively for a week. Today I cleaned the yard and assessed the results. Best poops ever! Very firm, no residue on grass. Dried out and white in a few days. Somewhat smaller than they had been, too, meaning that what they're eating is being put to use. Based on output, this is a healthy food that completely agrees with them.Cost for the beef flavor is very reasonable, but I may start rotating this with another flavor in a couple months. Ideally I want to rotate brands but I've been shocked how many foods rely on pea protein now that I'm paying attention. Kibbles are very small - they look like chocolate chips. Our dogs don't care and are not eating any faster, and I imagine this is a plus for small dogs. We always add a bit of cold water to the food to keep them hydrated and these kibbles seem to absorb it more than the other foods we've tried. Dogs eat it enthusiastically, but I must admit that's been true of every food. At any rate, everyone in our house is happy with Nature's Logic beef variety :).UPDATE: The dogs have been on this food for about 4 months now. I've lowered the rating to 4 stars for 2 reasons: 1) the price is very inconsistent. The first two 26 lb bags of beef flavor were $49 each - a terrific price for a premium food. A few weeks ago, however, it was $65. Same price on Chewy so it wasn't an Amazon quirk. I switched to chicken, for $63, since I wanted to rotate anyway. Now I see the chicken is $71 and the beef is down to $52. Companies have the right to increase prices, but usually dog food prices are stable for years at a time and creep up slowly. Now I worry that I won't ever know what to expect to pay with each purchase. 2) Charlie has lost weight on this food. We recently noticed his hip bones are sticking out so we've upped his allotment from 2.5 cups per day to 3- 3.5 (his ideal weight is 50 lbs). Dogs are still enjoying it and doing well on it, but it's less of a bargain than it appeared to be and I'm a little peeved at the company for playing around with pricing.

Nothing From China
I chose this product in large part because it does not source any of its ingredients from China, including the vitamins and minerals. That's very hard to find these days, even in human products.First, my dog is mostly raw fed. I use this for a labor break when I'm tired or traveling, for some vegetable nutrition when I haven't gotten around to preparing that, and as a cheaper alternative 10-15% of the time than real good quality meat to help me stay financially viable. Also, I occasionally put kibble in a kibble dispensing toy that gives my GSD an activity to keep her busy for awhile. It's difficult to rate it, though, for two reasons. First, because I think my dog's immune system isn't happy with every ingredient in the product. When I feed it to her, I note that she'll get some discharge from her eyes, which is a sign of minor immune reaction. The problem with so many of the kibbles these days is that they have so many ingredients in them. It raises the possibility of an allergic reaction if you have a dog that has any propensity for allergy and immune imbalance. At any rate, unlike other reviewers, I'm not going to downgrade the product rating because my particular dog is reacting to something in it. That just seems unfair. In order for one to truly know it's the product and not an individual ingredient or two in the product, you'd have to find another food from another manufacturer with the exact same ingredients list. Not going to happen. Many people err on the side of blaming the company, but I'm not going to do that as I am very well educated about the immune system and know it may well be my dog.The second reason it's difficult to rate is because it's not a primary product for me. It's an intermittent product, which makes evaluating my dog's health on it impossible to ascertain.I've given it four starts because kudos for no Chinese ingredients and an effort towards whole food sourcing.
