The Processor Sweet Spot
(Full Machine configuration included below) For every processor series there is a sweet spot. It is that CPU that is at cutting edge of technology, gives outstanding performance and is just at the bottom of the high end price scale. Any higher price you pay buys you only small and diminishing increases in performance (well and perhaps the admiration of the gaming crowd). This is currently that sweet spot processor. It has all the speed you need for MS Office, web browsing and even high end games with the right video configuration. Not even nosey old Norton bogs it down. I put Windows 7 on a 60 GB solid state hard drive and the machine boots in less than 30 seconds. I process a lot of multi-picture panoramas in Photoshop and they take just seconds compared to minutes on my last machine. This processor will cost just a few dollars more than a 920 but you will get considerably better performance. A machine built around this thing should be future-proof for at least four years. Here is my complete configuration. Build this and you will profit from almost two months of comparison shopping to get the most machine for the buck. The processor comes with a fan but the Cooler Master Hyper 212 is worth the extra bucks to assure the longevity of the processor. Happy I7 950 Owner
I have been using this CPU for 5 months now. Was able to OC it to 4.0 Ghz w/ no issues. 5 months of running 24/7 on my gaming rig, and not a single BSOD. This may not be the fastest processor out there, but with its price tag, I can't complain. I am a very happy customer with this one and will definitely recommend this to my buddies. I won't comment on the technical aspect of this chip anymore since there's a ton of info on other reviews. Delivery is also fast considering I'm in the middle east. Only took 10 days of waiting, which is way ahead of their projected delivery date. Here's my current build. I ordered most of my stuff here in Amazon. Ba Da BING!
Nothing more to add, this CPU is a rocket and easy to overclock. Last year I built a rig with the 920 and 12GB of ram on an EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 X58 3-Way SLI Core i7 Motherboard with Tri-Channel DDR3 and Tuning Utility . So all I did was pop out the 920, put in the 950, cleaned my Zalman cooler with a napkin and added new Arctic 5 Silver paste, and it was done. I'm writing this for those who have a 920 and were wondering if they can just drop in the 950 easily, and the answer is yes. And, this CPU runs 5 degrees cooler, all things being equal. Was it worth the upgrade? Yes, for three reasons: one, it runs cooler as I said, two, it runs noticably faster even stock, and three, I sold the 920 on Amazon for two hundred bucks (cooler was untouched and I had the box and everything). So all that makes it worth it. Reference for measuring speed: the 950 running stock with 12GB ram and an EVGA GeForce GTX470 Superclocked 1280 MB DDR5 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card 012-P3-1472-AR gets me 70+ FPS with Flight Sim X and most scenery turned up, and gets me real-time video editing with Premiere Pro CS5 and Canon 5D Mark II footage, NO rendering. Nice! FYI, my OS drive is a Western Digital 300 GB VelociRaptor SATA 10,000 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Enterprise Hard Drive WD3000HLFS , and I have a couple other drives to spread programs and scenery around, hence the good performance. Hope that helps if you're planning an upgrade or a new build!

Nice CPU
I originally was going to buy a i7-930 but got this one instead when the price was cut in HALF and it was a few bucks more than the 930. So far I'm liking this CPU. Had no problem on installation. I'm using a Corsair H50 cooling system so I can't comment on the included Heatsink/fan. The temps have been running around 36 degrees centigrade and my system hasn't got any hotter than 38c.

I highly recommend this processor, considering that the price of i7 extreme is "only" £700. You would save £500 and still get a high performance (for today's day's) brain of pc. i7 gives us 8-way multi-task processing, Turbo boost technology (up to 3.40 ghz if I'm right) and three-year's limited warranty.
