i think of this as a gun that uses a medium of sound waves instead of bullets
i feel much safer when walking around outside with this. it works so well that i purchased another for a friend who rides her bike in neighborhoods in laguna beach and sometimes deals with dogs. i will be purchasing a third for my mom and a fourth for another friend soon. it is very loud, but this technology has embedded a large range of frequencies that covers most dog breeds, most of which are inaudible to humans. how nice it is that it includes a people-predator-deterrent frequency as well. i wear earplugs around my neck when taking walks to protect my ears in case i need to use it.7/31/15 update: i never did buy another of these for my mom, but am revisiting the idea. i live in an isolated area, and a pack of dogs has formed. dogs can become bold, dangerous, wild and rabid when they get into packs and roam the country. the other morning i stepped outside and there they were. i yelled and they ignored me. i mean, there were several of them, so what had they to fear from me? i remembered this sound gun and ran inside to grab it. i came out blasting and the dogs took off running as fast as they could go. i hit it a few more times to make a lasting impression. they kept on running and i haven't seen them since; but they will probably return, and when they do, i will not forget to use this as a deterrent. it doesn't seem to affect cats, at least not my cat, thank goodness, maybe because cat's ear mechanics are more deeply embedded and protected from outside noise than dog's ears. since i have a cat now, keeping potential predators away from the house has taken on heightened importance. she is an indoor cat, and were she to accidentally get out, she would not be skilled at protecting herself from coyotes or dogs, or for that matter anything bigger than she is.

Nice to have something that works.
Bought this after getting nipped while bicycling. It carries well on the bike with the attachment (purchased separately). I ride gravel roads and it stays put. It is high pitched, loud, wavering and piercing. Doesn't matter what direction the wind is blowing which was one of my main considerations deciding between pepper spray and this.I have used it 4 times on dogs in the past several months and each time they backed off. The most determined dog I pass regularly came within about 6 feet and wouldn't come closer. He didn't like it and was growling but he kept his distance. I kept it going directly at him till he gave up. He doesn't sit at the end of the drive anymore when I go by. A little disappointed that I haven't had a chance to use it on the one that nipped me. Found that it even works on red winged blackbirds. I blast them when I see them on their glide path coming towards me or hold it over my head when they attack from behind. They eventually seemed to get the idea on the routes I regularly take. I grab it when coming up on dogs I'm not sure about but only use it when they come threateningly close. It is kind of a confidence boost that I'm not defenseless. When I first received it I tested it out in the yard pointing it away from the house. Even though it was some distance and pointed away from them, my own dogs which were close to the house went to the door wanting to get away from it. The attachment is easy to switch between bikes. Easy to use and the battery has lasted all summer.

seems to work pretty well - pretty large unit
my ancient dog scare unit fell and broke so I needed a new one. Not near as many on the market now. Tho there were few reviews on this one I looked at the maker's website and decided to try it. We have a lot of loose dogs in our area. Most are nice but they follow us and our dog out to the hiway where they are a danger to themselves and drivers, other dogs. I've only had this about 2 wks but have managed to discourage several dogs from following me. I've also used it to break up 2 fights and THAT was great. Also stopped one snarly dog halfway down his driveway. I HATE dogs that think I shouldn't walk down a public street. So this seems to work. Cons: A) its big and doesn't fit a jacket pocket well and I bump trigger button once in a while B) Its LOUD and hurts my ears too. Can be a little embarrassing to use it on a dog when its owner is in the yard too. My old silent one was very discrete. I gave it 4 stars for size and unknown durability. But I'm happy that it works. Just tonight I convinced a large dog to stop running out into the street at us. Think he is a nice dog but he was full tilt with his hackles up as he didn't recognize me yet. I live in brown bear country. I'm wondering how it might work on them. Haven't ever met a bear in the area while on foot but it is always a possibility in the summer.

Scares children, old people, wildlife, aliens, and more
This thing will make you jump. It is loud and piercing! Haven't tried on the dog, but it sure did scare some wildlife away! It would also assure deafness of an attacker if placed near their ears!As noted elsewhere - this unit would not be good for those looking to discreetly repel an animal such as a dog, pet moose, or african lion. You're going to get the attention of damn near everyone around you when you pull the trigger on this puppy! Be ready for glaring looks from the over-zealous animal lover who owns the dog you're repelling with this unit... and if they stare at you long - hit the trigger again and repel them too - or at least you can muffle their derogatory and inflammatory remarks so that neither of you hear them :)

DO NOT BUY! DOES NOT WORK AS ADVERTISED
Does not work, DO NOT BUY. i deliver packages part time. Without fail on county roads, people let their dogs run amok. I was attacked and bitten multiple times. This device only ANGERED the aggressive dogs. Sure...it's loud. Great if you want to make a lot of noise and look like a clown while being devoured by rabid dogs. DON'T bother and don't risk your safety.Returning.
