Thank you for reaching out to us. Both permanent markers and paint work very well on our painting rocks.

Q: What is the white chalky stuff on these rocks?

I bought my rocks for painting and I don't remember a white powder. I primed them first and there was no problem with paint sticking to rocks. I also spray painted them with a spray matte shellac to finish. I would recommend these rocks for purchase.
