Avanti!: Beginning Italian, 2nd Edition

As are all these days it is an expensive textbook but I am learning a ton using this book in my Italian 1 class along with the workbook. Thankfully these two texts will get me through 6 courses of Italian. I like the way it is organized, the examples and practice that reinforces the lesson, and all the interesting Italian culture details. I am glad it is the text for my classes.

Excellent Italian book. We used it in Italian class at community college.

Required for class, but not a great help. I felt I needed to supplement it with Prego! for better understanding.

Required textbook for a course

This is a very expensive beginning Italian text book that is useless unless you purchase the supplemental DVD?s for an additional $150. No where did it say that would be necessary. The book has no information in it that isn't relevant to the DVD's. Everything is outdated and no longer In print. I am now stuck with a $160 kindle version of Avanti! For beginning Italian and there is nothing to learn in the book without the additional dvd's. Who uses DVD's anymore anyway. I don't have a DVD player so it will cost me another $150 for American external drive. The entire way amazon is promoting this book is misleading and incorrect and now I can't afford to take my beginning Italian class that required these books for class. I'm a very disappointed long time prime member that will find no satisfaction in this matter. My prime membership is up soon and I may not be joining again. I may also send back all five amazon firetv's I recently bought.

Using for private instruction, it’s just what I needed and arrived in perfect shape.

This book is not helpful to some one who desires to learn Italian on their own. The format of this book makes understanding the language difficult. Many concepts are left unexplained or poorly explained. I can not comment concerning its utility in a class room setting, but it fails miserably at self-instruction. I learned German through self-instruction so that when I visited Austria, I spoke only German. I had no difficulty with the language. Therefore I can comment from personal experience. I do not recommend this book for self-instruction. It should not be offered to the general reader without indicating that it is appropriate for class room instruction only.
