Ultralife Reef Products, Red Slime Stain Remover, .71 Ounce

This actually took 3 doses, but I don’t count the first. The first time, I only used a half dose to be extra safe, but it did nothing. So the instructed dose is most definitely needed. The first full dose cleared maybe 80%, but there was still cyano left on the sand and partially on the rocks, so I ran the second dose 48 hours after the first as instructed, and it completely cleared up the remainder. Will it come back? Too soon to tell, but if it does, I’m not worried, seeing how effective this is. Not only did this not kill anything, but it didn’t even so much as irritate my corals or make any of them close up. Just make SURE to follow all instructions. They say to run an air stone both before and during use, so I ran an air stone about a full 24 hours before adding the formula to the tank, and kept it running the entire 96 hours during treatment. I even overdid it on the equipment just to be extra safe because I love all my fish and inverts and didn’t wanna lose anything, so I used a 100 gallon pump on the air stone when I only have a 32.5 gallon, just to be all the way on the safe side and make sure the tank was extra aerated. Overall tho, my tank is back to crystal clear, and it’s an extremely easy, cost efficient, and safe cyano resolution when used properly. Can’t go wrong here. 10/10

I'm frankly surprised that this product was so effective against a major aquarium nuisance with seemingly no drawbacks, and it is very inexpensive too. My system contains several high bioload fish (including mature adult crosshatch triggers, a huge sohal tang, a big naso tang, and a zebra eel) and non-photosynthetic corals which require frequent feeding. I always have detectable nutrients - nitrate 5ppm and phosphate .3ppm - but only recently developed a cyanobacteria problem. I'm not certain what triggered it but it quickly covered the rocks and sand, and as usual it would quickly return after physically removing it... and of course nothing eats it. I used one full vial (enough to treat 300 gallons) in my 500 gallon reef system, so I under-dosed about 40%. The odorless yellow powder discolored the water only briefly. After 24 hours about most of the cyano is gone, and so far there have been no detectible adverse effect on corals or fish. Per instructions I did NOT turn off filtration. But I did adjust the skimmer by reducing the water level and air intake, and it has pulled out quite a bit of skimmate. pH did not drop appreciably but it runs low all the time, in the range of 7.8 - 8.0, because of biopellets. I've already ordered a second vial, and will use it if there is any cyano left after 48 hours.

Used it once, it got rid of the cyanobacteria quickly and haven't had to use it again.

As of now on day 5 and have dosed 2 times ive seen some reduction but not as I was expecting. Added 2 powerful powerheads to ensure it would keep the PH up an extra flow to dislodge any stuck pieces. I'm not dissipointed but was expecting more from this product. I have seen no problems with any of my inverts, Anemones, fish or coral. Will update. If anything changes.

I should be sceptical of this. It seems like a miracle cure which of course, never is, is it? However I have tried a lot of different, more natural solutions to eliminate a severe case of red slime in my marine tank. Low nitrates, but the Phosphates of 0.25 were causing the problem. However even after reducing phosphates I didn't seem to be able to get the slime to go away. Removing it by syphoning made the tank look great but then 4 days later, it was back. I am sure there are plenty of better hobbyists than me that will see this as another case of someone who cannot control his water conditions. Maybe thats true but after 20 years of reef keeping I am not doing too bad, but this problem stumped me. So, cruising the internet I found some Youtube videos of people showing their tank before-and-after using Ultralife's product. So I gave it a go. It took two goes, one 48 hours after the other. One week later, all the slime has gone. It changed cold (to more of a brown) within 18 hours of the second application. A day or so later it fell of the rock (and clogged up my filter intake before I got to remove it) and since it went it has not returned. My advice - turn off your skimmer just before you put this in and leave it off for for 24 hours. I would also do a water change after it has all worked. Very happy with it indeed.

Added to the tank which caused several immediate effects. The water clouded white, the protein skimmer foamed over, the red slime began to diminish, and I had about a inch of water drop. However, do to heavy covering after the first, second, and third applications little progress was made. I began daily applications and removed all the ornaments from the tank cleaned them as well as sifted the gravel. in the end, the slime was cleared by about 90% and the water was crystal clear but it was short lived. Overall, this product performed better than others but is not panacea.

I have a multitank system totaling about 100 gal. I use a refugium/sump and a planted decorative macro tank. Somewhere along the way, cyano took over my system and even the macro's were being pushed out. It's supposed to work the other way around. I battled the cyano with manual removal, clean-up crews, nitrate reduction, etc. I don't generally like to add supplements to cure a problem. I like to fix the problem, not treat symptoms. But even after all of this, the cyano grew back so fast, nothing could take hold to bank the nutrients, the cyano was using. I looked at a bunch of products and most are erythramyacin based. This required you to remoce your charcoal, stop uv sterilization, etc.. It also posed a possible do reduction and ph shift because of the chemical itself. This stuff, I don't know its active ingredient, states you don't need to remove your charcoal, and actually encourages uv sterilization. It also claims to be benificial for decorative macroalgae. So I tried it. There is always the possibility of ph shifts and do reduction from enmasse dying of the cyano, so manual removal is good for prep. Anyways it cleared my entire system in 48 hours. All my macro's perked right up, my entire system looks "brighter" and the macro's are looking healthier already.

1. Put in an air stone fed by an air pump with a check valve (in case the pump fails the line can become a siphon and empty your tank out on the floor). Add Buffer to get pH to 8.3 (I use Seachem Marine Buffer) 2. Wait a few days. 3. Test your parameters (pH, kH, NO2, NO3, NH3, etc.) 4. Empty your protein skimmer (if you have one) 5. Follow directions; I mixed about 1.5 teaspoons in a plastic cup of seawater from my 29 gallon Nano tank. Be sure to turn off any Auto-Top Off (ATO) prior to doing this 6. Pour mixture in 7. Plug ATO back in 8. Check your protein skimmer within 1 hour of application. It will probably overflow. It gets active for a bit. You may need to choke the incoming air (my Tunze has a screw-collar clamp I nearly closed). You will need to check your skimmer regularly. 9. Check parameters 10. Add Marine Buffer that night and Marine Builder the following day (to up pH to 8.3 and also to up kH) 11. 48 hours later, if any remains, add another dose and repeat all the steps. I added another to be safe. 12. 1 week and a day later my 29 gallon nano (4 fish, 15 invertebrates, live rock, zoas and other soft coral) is free of Cyanobacteria everywhere in the tank, back chamber, etc.. My Nitrates sit at 5ppm; pH is 8.3; KH is 14 dKH, my Ammonia and Nitrites are 0.

Works as advertised, but you really need to give some thoughts to what caused the red slime (Cyanobacteria) problem in the first place. Expect you have a water quality issues – phosphates would be my guess. Check your water supply, perhaps your RO filter is past its life expectancy, or you need to upgrade or change where you're getting your water from. Really don't recommend using this, or any other product, on a health system, but if you do get a big bloom this product will help you get it under control before it reeks havoc with your system – if not addressed quickly you may end up with significant die off (macro algae, etc) which will through off your system's balance and could lead to the whole tank cycling – what a mess. I haven't had to uses this product since I was a novice to the hobby – been at-least 15 years, but recently had to uses it. My RO unit died, i got lazy, and did a couple of small top ups with tap water on my nano tank – 7 gallon, and probably 2-3 cups of water, started the problem. My wife may have also topped it up a couple times with distilled, but remineralized water, when I was away on business. Anyways, full bloom, macro die off, tank had already starting to cycle by the time I got back, etc.. This product helped be getting it back under control, along with a "cycle" product to help keep nitrites, etc. under control. Value = price really isn't reflective of what it should cost, but if you need it quick (one-day shipping) it's worth it. ** Additionally – this product will also get rid of the little black spots that skunk cleaner shrimp sometimes get. I looked into it years ago and couldn't identify what it was, but noted that when I'd used this product the spots would go away.

Great product. Have tried others but no effect...after a filter failure I couldnt clear the slime even with daily manual removal, skimmer working overload etc. This had a noticeable effect within 48 hours and cleared the slime completely within 72 hours. The skimmer goes mad though so requires regular emptying (like every 30 minutes after dosing). There was no adverse effect on livestock or corals either.

I have a 150 gallon salt water tank that I was battling for months when it came to controlling levels and minimizing red slime algae.
