3 Bowls & Reverence for traditional Cooking
My 3 Bowls arrived approximately on date stated. It is wrapped well. Only thing l noticed is a big fold on upper left, Back Cover. I will have to put it under heavy books to get fold to flatten. Thank for this book.Recipes are very interesting, coming from a monastery. I have tried 7 recipies & they are all wonderful. To your Health & stay the course, during this period of time. Cooking calms the mind, especially when one can go back to earlier years, when familiar smells envelope your senses.

Recipes use onions. I you are looking for a Buddhist cookbook that does not utilize the five pungent spices look elsewhere. This is just a plain old vegetarian recipe book. Unfortunately, when purchasing on kindle there is no way to ascertain this until after buying and no way to return. Otherwise, recipes look ok.

Zen.
This book not only conveys delicious, simple, vegan friendly, vegetarian recipes but it gives you a small insight into the life of Monastery cooking and living. It puts focus on the flavors of the food, being mindful of where your food was grown, how it is prepared, served, eaten, saved; the whole process. The book is wonderfully written and you don't feel as if you're reading a cook book or recipe book - it all flows together so seamlessly. The author takes you from the garden where the caretaker is tending it daily to the cook who prepares the food with inspiring mindfulness to the monks who enjoy the final products. This book helps bring Buddhism to your cutting board in so many ways. This is one of my absolute favorite books about food.

when 3 bowls is too much
I had great expectations of 3 Bowls, when a friend recommended the book as a great trove of vegetarian recipes. While I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, I found it less than practical because almost all dishes are designed for larger groups than I would ever entertain at home (12). It is rather cumbersome to have to divide the quantities to my own household. While I am used to doing this anyway, it becomes quite awkward when scaling down from 12, since the effect of seasonings is different. I probably would not have bought the book if I had browsed through it in my local bookstore.

lovely book but not that usable
This is a lovely book with a lot of insight into life at an American Zen monastery. Unfortunately, I haven't found the recipes themselves to work for our family, due to both sizing issues and ingredient requirements. I prefer Isa Chandra Moskowitz's and Dreena Burton's books.

Simply wonderful
I love to cook and I have recently found out that I am highly allergic to preservatives and hormones in food. This book has given me wonderful "made from scratch" recipes that I can use. The bleu cheese dressing is just marvelous!! I really enjoy using this book to cook with.

Three Bowls
We purchased this book after spending time at the Buddhist monastery in upstate New York. The food served there was simple yet phenomenal. We have prepared more than twenty recipes from this book and each one has become a new favorite in our home. If you are looking to shift your eating repertoire to vegan or are just interested in adding some vegan selection to your daily diet, we highly recommend this cook book. It also provides the reader some information about the foods and routines in the monastery.

Got here in short order and in perfect condition. I didn't try much of the recipes
Got here in short order and in perfect condition. I didn't try much of the recipes, yet, but they sound really good. The only thing that keeps a star from it is the lack of photos of what the meals will look like, which would make for faster browsing when making the shopping list and deciding what to try next.
