As Iron Sharpens Iron: Building Character in a Mentoring Relationship

The Marvel of Mentoring
I have yet to be disappointed with anything written by Howard Hendricks. In this book, he does a superb job of presenting the tremendous worth and transforming power of a mentoring relationship between two men. While these principles would also apply to a woman-to-woman relationship, Hendricks is writing to provide support for the Christian men's movement "Promise Keepers."There are two sections to this work: how to find a mentor, and how to be a mentor. Hendricks emphasizes there are many more men seeking mentors than there are men who are willing to be mentors. He discourages actually using the title of "mentor" when establishing such a supportive relationship, for fear it will intimate one of the parties. Instead, he promotes referring to the interaction as what would occur between two friends. Hendricks also describes how to spot a mentor or a protégé, then how to avoid common pitfalls of such an arrangement. For anyone seeking to learn from a respected male friend, or for someone seeking to invest his life-lessons of experience in a younger man, this book is simply invaluable.

Good book on the Topic
I was looking specifically for a book on mentoring men in a Christian environment and this is exactly what this book covers. There is lots of good information and it is well organized. There was a bit too much "fluff" for me but then I did not need the convincing about the topics that others might.Overall, a very good investment.

Mentoring for Men
I reviewed some 11 books on mentoring this past summer, and this one written by Prof towards the end of the Promise Keepers movement is still the best out there. Mentoring still is a scarce commodity in our culture, and getting it started is still difficult and not much has hanged in close to 20 years. This book is for both mentors and mentees (proteges).

Thank you, Dr. Hendricks
As always, Dr. Hendricks comes through again with timely advice for being a mentor and friend to other men. I have profited much from his writings and this one deserves to be read and re-read.

Comprehensive look at Mentoring
Howard and Bill Hendricks provide a comprehensive look at the area of Christian mentoring. It discusses issues and approaches from both the mentor and mentee perspective and is a highly practical, hands-on guidebook on the topic. I've looked at several books on mentoring and I would consider this book foundational.

Get sharp
The book is in two parts, addressed to those wishing to be mentored and those who mentor. It is a very good, practical guide, giving lots of very helpful advice about the process from both sides, going over the basics of what mentoring is, why it is so necessary and helpful in this day and age, how to find a mentor and how to choose a mentoree. The second part of the book seeks to encourage more men to mentor men. It is written by two well respected Christian men, but I think it would be useful for non Christians who are looking for a style of mentoring that is not work based, but life based. If you have never heard very much about mentoring, but you are beginning to think about it, I would recommend this book as an excellent place to start.

It is good but geared towards men
It is good but geared towards men, although you can still use basically the same information for women. It has some good principles which I have taken on board. I would recommend the book for those interested in mentoring.
