Saved me from calling an electrician!
Very easy tool to use for non-electricians. Bought this so I could trace my 3-way switch wires. I live in an older home so the wires all come in different colors so it was driving me insane. Hooked this up and followed the beep sounds and it worked perfectly! $30 tool saved me from having to call an electrician and now I have another tool!

Be sure you have fresh batteries when using
During our CCTV installations we use this tester to locate our CAT5 and rg59 cables. This product works great for the price. I've been able to use this to locate my cables very easily I will say that you need to have fresh batteries when using it and be sure that you turn it off the batteries don't seem to last long. When you have fresh batteries the noise level of the test is perfect. If your batteries are weakening you will struggle to hear the signal when you find your wire. This product has saved us time and locating cables.

Solid device, works as advertised.
I bought this product over the comparable Fluke Networks one because it includes connectors for various cable types (RJ-45 or Ethernet, RJ-11 or telephone, Coaxial or cable, wire clamps, etc). I can say that it works just as described, through walls, with a visual and audible alert (the Fluke device only has audible).I ran my test over wire that was approximately 70 feet in length, going through walls, metal and PVC conduits, exposed along a wall, etc. This device worked flawlessly to trace the wire through all levels of exposure.I'm happy to report this product works well and is worth the money paid for it, and I believe it comes with more accessories (cable connectors) and a few extra frills for less money than the comparable Fluke device. Since I don't own the Fluke device, I cannot attest to the sensitivity of this product vs. the other one, but I can say that this Garner Bender product found my wire through different media at a perfectly acceptable level of satisfaction.

Works great for tracing wires.
I bought this to trace some cat 6 wires I installed a few years ago and the labels fell of the wires so I wasn't sure what wires went where from the switch. I spent about 30 mins running around the house tracing each line and it worked on runs of over 100'. I also used it to trace a mystery wire in my RV. Only thing I'd like to see different is for it to have a female RJ-45 connector. For my male terminated cat 6 wires I had to use the alligator clips on one of the pins on the connector instead of just plugging the transmitter in. This is a useful tool though and I am glad I bought it.

Extremely short drop length, never got it to work properly.
This product has an extremely short drop length listed as 10ft on the package, but is not listed in the listing on Amazon.I used it to try to "Fox and Hound" my home network from my basement to various rooms in a 2 story house and not a single jack was found by this device.Additionally, the probe is a pain to get the batteries in and out and you risk bending the metal connectors just by getting the batteries in and out.Overall, very low quality and probably only works for lines in the 5ft range at best.

Good tool even in a wireless world
In the age of wireless everything this tool may seem unnecessary; until you work in an older home or building. Reusing pervious installations of coax, UTP, speaker wire, etc. can save time, money, and aggravation, if you can figure out what goes where. The back of this tool has connectors for all types of infrastructure. The sender will run for 45 minutes before timing out to save the batteries, and the probe has adjustable volume which is good for noisy cross connect locations. about the only negative is that the coax connector is male and requires you have a female to female adapter to connect to other male ends. Also the probe tends to slide out of the pocket on the back of the sender if you tip it upside down.

Intermittent Functionality
This device is very handy and it works well most of the time. However, sometimes it just does not turn on. Nothing. Take the batteries out, put them back in, and it works. This happens far too frequently. By the way, this thing has the worst battery compartment door every. It is very difficult to remove - I had to use a knife, even then it took a while.

Good Value, Replacement works great
We received the first one broken. Amazon shipped a new one before we returned the broken one (had to guarantee to return or be charged), however, the speed in replacement was excellent and appreciated. Tool works great for close proximity traces.

Good wire tracer tool
I recently moved into a new house and it's strewn with unlabeled cabling of all types: telephone, data, cable tv. After trying to trace things by hand I got fed up and bought this to assist and I wish I'd bought one a long time ago. It's a nice design and keeps everything together. Batteries are included but the probe takes 3 LR44 watch cell batteries which are annoying. The tone generator takes 2 AAA. Theres some rubber grippy material on both units and the tone generator has a plastic belt clip moulded into the back of its case. The probe fits into the tone generator for easy storage but it is tight a tight fit and can be hard to remove. The tone generator has less for Coax cable (RJ 6), 2 pair phone mod plug, 4 pair RJ-45 ethernet mod plus, a pair of alligator clips, and a small blade probe. They are stored inside the rear flip-up case which is nice except the bending of the cables without strain relief looks like an obvious point of failure. The probe has adjustable volume (it's loud!) and a light for visual indication. The tone generator has an indicator light when it's on and an auto-off power feature. It made quick work of tracing the snakes den of cables up to 100 feet with no problems. Overall very happy but I would caution that along with the lack of strain relief the overall durability of the unit seems dubious: this is not a contractor tool and I think a single drop to the floor or worse, off of a step ladder would be curtains for this device, especially for the tone generator box which seems like an unforgiving plastic. But for the price it did exactly what was expected and worked well.
