Maglite Heavy-Duty Incandescent 3-Cell D Flashlight in Display Box, Gray

I love all MAGLITEs that I own. The 6D light is incredibly powerful. Perfect for an airport beacon. :-) Seriously, the adjustable focus allows for wide flood to tight spot with a range that allows you to see considerable distances with clarity at night. Would be perfect for neighborhood watches. The one and only complaint I have with MAGLITEs is the quality of the manufacturing of the bulbs. They last very long but the accuracy in which they are shaped and attached to the bulb's base during manufacturing is often poor. This results in uneven light distribution in the beam. The bulb in this particular 6D light (one of several that I have owned and currently own) was tilted in its base by a very visible amount. When the light is focused to spot, this seriously affects the ability of the MAGLITE to cast as much light at a distance because much of light is reflected by the MAGLITE's reflector off to angles that prevent it from contributing to the center of the beam. This affects its power and range of illumination. However, I happened to have spare bulbs and selected one that was manufactured more precisely, installed it in the MAGLITE, and the beam was perfect. So if you get one that shoots much of its light off to one side of the beam center, look for another bulb (there is a spare in the base of the flashlight) and swap out the bulb. In addition to bulbs that are tilted in their base (not the socket of the MAGLITE that receives the bulb, but the base of the bulb iteself), the size and shape of the nipple where the glass was formed can also cause issues with light distribution, though not as severe as bulbs that are attached to their bases incorrectly. This can often contribute to uneven light distribution in the beam. I have many MAGLITEs of all sizes, except C-cells, and this problem occurs relatively often in the D-cell lights, but not in all instances. I learned to keep some extra bulbs on hand not only for when one burns out (again, they last long) but also to replace a poorly-manufactured one in a new MAGLITE. I think that MAGLITE should work on the quality control of its bulbs (which may be manufactured by someone for MAGLITE). Regardless, the bulb issue, if you have one, is easily corrected be replacement of the bulb. I would still recommend MAGLITEs to anyone. They are tough, long lasting and powerful. Just don't let batteries sit too long in the light without changing them with fresh ones. If they leak, they fuse to the inside of the light and you won't get them out.

There is no flashlight I can think of, of any type or price that is better than this one. If you have no flashlights, buy it; if you have flashlights but not this one, buy it and be prepared to discard the flashlights you have. It is tough and durable. It will serve faithfully no matter how badly you use or abuse it. It will outlive you, and you will be able to hand it down to your grandchildren. Professionals of all sorts have come to rely on this flashlight. The efficiency of the reflector is also legendary. I compared this flashlight with the stock krypton bulb to a Rayovac Industrial flashlight with a halogen bulb. The Maglite won hands down. To check, we took the bulb out of the Rayovac and put it into the Maglite. Same result: the Maglite simply put out more light even with the same bulb. I also like the silver color. The black color seems to be popular, but I prefer one that is brightly colored or easy to spot in emergency, safety, rescue, outdoor, or survival conditions. So there. If you want a flashlight, please buy this one. You will not regret it. POSTSCRIPT Maglite now has an LED version New Maglite brand 3 Watt Luxeon LED Flashlight 2 D Cell Gray Housing . The LED will not blow if you drop in on the ground (the regular incandescent version above will last forever, but you will have to replace the bulb once in a while; LED will never have to be replaced). It may be more $$$, but the light is also brighter.

It puts out an excellent great distance (but narrow beam) spot light and an adequate adjustable wide beam although it does have a black hole in the center of the wide beam. I got it because I like the idea of using readily available (at home) D cells instead of working with my lanterns which use the large 6v batteries which I don't seem to have when I need them. The big 6v battery lanterns are better than this but as I said, I have trouble remembering to get the special batteries for them. Like someone else said, you can rotate all your used/dated D cells thru this thing and get enough juice. That's what I've been doing with an old 2nd hand 5 cell over the years and the strategy seems to work. I have lots of 2 cells flashlights that I always change batteries in yearly and the yr-old ones then get a 2nd chance in the 5 cell flashlight. The 6v battery is only one battery, if it goes, it's dark, no spares in the drawers. D cells are always in something to steal from. Good price also made this an easy decision.

I'm a big fan of Maglites as they're built tough and last forever (almost). These are flashlights that you buy once and keep forever. I have a 4D cell for use around home and figured I needed one for my truck. The 6D cell is big and hefty. Has a good weight with it with all the batteries in it. It's also quite long as well. Pic is comparing this flashlight with a 33 inch softball bat. I did swap out the bulb with an LED one to brighten up the flashlight. I don't know why LED bulbs aren't standard in all Maglites but oh well. Great flashlight and definitely has a place in my truck.

Arrived on time & this Flashlight is heavy duty & works well but only giving 4 stars because this Maglight seems to be weaker then my old one from years ago. Light is dimmer & doesn’t seem to light up as far or as wide a distance as my old one. I even tried different brands of batteries just in case the batteries I used were old but it didn’t make a difference in battery brightness of the beam.

This is very high quality. just like the one I have from 20 years ago (still works) this is an extra. The gray color is more of a gray gun metal color very nice. (not painted on.) The light is bright. I lthink the light brighter than the led bulb. Is an easy upgrade to led if I choose to later. Nice Flashlight.

I love my Maglite flashlights and have even given them to friends who,at first think it's an odd gift, and then later tell me stories about how invaluable it was to them in a power failure, crawling around their dark attic,etc. My only warning is don't order a silver one and expect to receive a silver one. I already own a silver Maglite which I have mounted on the wall with the handy clips that must be ordered separately. I ordered another silver to give to my sister and instead I received a gray one. When I contacted Amazon customer service I had to deal with 2 clueless agents before FINALLY reaching someone who was polite,understanding and handled the return(thanks Debbie!) However, I received another gray one(labeled silver) as the replacement. Apparently Amazon contacted Maglite and was told there might be subtle color differences between lots. Baloney! Silver is NOT gray and gray is not silver. I returned both of the gray ones and canceled my order. I'm very happy with the Maglites I already have(silver AND gray ones) and just won't be ordering another silver one, which,according to Maglite,doesn't really exist. I guess mine is a collector's item.It must be worth a fortune!

This is the largest cyclidrical-shaped flashlight made. It's huge size is purposeful and intentional... it is not a flaw or drawback... but a benefit: It doubles as a great self-defense club. A quick tap of the "ON" button delivers a momentarily blinding flash of light into the eyes of an attacker or menacing trespasser, giving you a couple seconds for the other end of this heavy metal club to come down on his head, in an effective (but non-leathal) blow, allowing you to flee the scene. Unlike a can of Mace or pepper spray, this self-defense tool can also brilliantly light up a room or a dark outdoor area. The package claims over 10 hours of usable light from the SIX big "D" cell batteries. It's obviously not a flashlight for a purse or glove box... it's way to big for that... such needs are better filled by any of the many small and powerful L.E.D. flashlights on the market. This flashlight, unlike most L.E.D. flashlights, has a focusable light: a twist of the end cap changes the beam from a room-filling flood, to a tight and narrow intensely bright spotlight. Simply holding this huge metal club in your hand may be intimidating enough to prevent the need to use it in self-defense. And if you really want to take it to the extreme, I recommend checking out the after-market parts for these massive Maglites at the site: XCAPECAP DOT COM ... where you can make these Maglites into longer and more effective tools of self-defense. I actually used their "Two D Cell Extender" to turn my SIX D-Cell Maglite into a whopping EIGHT D-Cell Maglite, with a crenelated self-defense bezel on one end, and a billet striker tip on the other end.

This was bought for my little nephew who goes camping often with his mum. He sleeps with the torch, camping or not. He isn’t afraid of the dark anymore and I’m his favorite auntie.
