THE SIGNET CLASSIC SHAKESPEARE SERIES The Work of the Worldโs Greatest Dramatist A great way to enjoy twenty of Shakespeareโs timeless plays, this volume is a retelling of the stories in prose by the famous nineteenth-century brother and sister Charles and Mary Lamb. Keeping Shakespeareโs own words whenever possible but making the plots and language easily accessible, this entertaining and readable collection has enthralled both children and adults ever since it first appeared in 1807. Here Shakespeareโs best-known tragedies and comedies come to life. Defined by moving drama, vivid action, great wit, or fantastic imagination, each play comes alive with charm and clarity for readers of any ageโas a helpful preface to the original Elizabethan version or even as enriching, unforgettable stories in themselves. With an Introduction by Susan J. Wolfson and an Afterword by Sylvan Barnet, general editor of the Signet Classic Shakespeare series. Review: Beautiful and timeless - Attracted to the quality of the cover and the overall publishing was so attractive. The plays in prose is so significant for readers who may not want to tackle the archaic writing form. Recommend. Review: Perfect "Tales" - My very young friend celebrates his birthday with William Shakespeare. I thought it would be a great way to introduce him to Shakespeare's stories by giving him a copy of the Lamb "Tales." His mother and father can read the stories to him and when he's older, I hope he'll pick up the plays and read them himself. The book is an older copy but it was in great shape. FLAWLESS. And, most importantly, it arrived in time for the birthday party. Superb service!

Ideal for family reading hour
The Lambs' classic book is an ideal read-aloud text and a perfect introduction to Shakespeare for young readers and listeners. We've found it suitable for our older children especially -- ages 7 and up. Each "tale" takes around fifteen minutes to read, and although some of the vocabulary is rather elevated, vocal inflection and emphasis can aid comprehension. The Lambs have done a commendable job of capturing the drama of each of Shakespeare's plays in a 10-12 page narrative format. Highly recommended.

A modern approach to an old favorite
The book introduces the Shakespeare plays as stories. The language is a mixture of Shakespeare's dialect and a more modern English. It works well.

So far so good. Haven't read it yet but the book itself is in good shape.

Extremely small print
These pages are extremely hard to read because the font is really small, maybe 8 point, with not much white space on the page. It seems they were trying to fit as much as they could on each page in order to save paper. I haven't begun trying to read it yet, but it is seems it will be an unpleasant experience due to the difficulty keeping concentration on the small print. I may just return it.

Great book for anyone, children or adults who want to start getting into Shakespeare
The book was in excellent condition just as promised. I have an old copy of the work, but wanted this one for my grandchild. It's a great way to introduce people to reading Shakespeare.

I like everything about this book. It give a general understanding of Shakespeare's plays. Simple enough for a child to understand, relevant and interesting enough for an adult to enjoy.

A useful book to have...
As an A level English student soon to begin studying Othello in depth, I decided to buy this book as a way of introducing myself to the plot of the play and the characters. Although I have not read any of the other stories yet, if the Lambs' retelling of The Moor of Venice is anything to go by it was worth spending 85p on a used copy! Yes, the book might have been originally aimed at children who lived in 1807, but it still can be used today by all ages as a useful overview of 20 of the Bard's plays. As you might expect, the language is a little archaic but it does a good job of giving background on the major characters and their role in the play, whilst more or less keeping the prose as simplistic enough as a fairy tale. It even includes some of the original speech which, when placed in prose context, seems much less cryptic than when first read in play form. If only I'd bought this book when I studied A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest and Hamlet! I will definitely, if I get the chance, recommend it to my classmates. What else can I say? I good, useful book that should well belong on everyone's bookcases as a point of reference. Well done Mr and Mrs Lamb!
