Extremely pleased with the set. The pieces look authentic and rustic. The board is a bit small but completely adequate. The value can't be beat, either. I'd have happily paid another $10-15 for it and been just as satisfied.

I was introduced to this version of chess at Ft. Bragg, NC in 1970 at the Center for Special Warfare as part of my training to join a MAT team in Vietnam. While I never played the game, I watched it being played by the elders in the hamlets in the village of Dong Xoai. This westernized piece set for the game allows westerners like me who have a difficult time identifying the traditional pieces enjoy playing the game. The pieces are well done, small enough to travel well, and, as I said earlier, a pleasure to play.

When I first learned Xiangqi, the biggest obstacle was learning to recognize the pieces, so I was looking for a figurine set to make it easier to teach the game to my friends. I was really pleasantly surprised by the quality of this set for the price. The pieces are decently "carved" and easy to identify. The suede-like board was very nice too. I'm definitely pleased with my purchase. I don't know how sturdy the pieces will prove in the long run, but since this will be used only by adults, I don't expect any issues.

It is a beautiful set. It is well designed. I purchased 3 sets, giving 2 to friends so they can enjoy as well. Well worth the money.

Awesome. Small pieces, but I've never seen Chinese chess figurines before. Should make learning the game easier and more fun.

I really wanted to find a nice looking set that have figures rather than the traditional disc so that I could teach my children. This set is light weight and beautiful. It has made teaching my children a breeze.

Good Chinese chess set that is representative of the actual pieces being played instead of flat discs. I consider myself an intermediate in Chinese set but had a difficult time first learning it due to the characteristics of the flat discs found in typical board games. I bought this merely to add to my collection. First impression is that the board is quite small, much smaller than any normal western or Chinese chess set not designed for travel purposes. Second impression happened when I accidentally dropped one of the advisers on the floor no less than 20 seconds of unboxing the pieces and the head broke off. A quick glue job did the trick but the pieces are quite breakable but they do feel sturdy.I don’t need instructions but a simple slip of paper in the box showing the arrangement of the pieces would have been nice. Initially I was wondering why I had one adviser riding the horse and two kings with me. It turns out that the king is on the horse!
