and your property insurance agency will give you a discount. every 10 years (or "zero" year) replace the battery. the half-life of the radio-emitter is 400 years, so you just got a big bang for your buck (it's so weak the plastic case contains it, so you won't glow in the dark)! just remember the battery: many fire-deaths are in homes with a detector having a dead battery/no battery.this version picks up the hot/fine carbons, so mount it in an area near a furnace or gas flame water heater, etc. get the photo-e detector for your living area, etc, for the smoldering fires that can kill you with toxic fumes. these are, as i posted, Life Insurance! if you have time, stop by a fire squad and ask to talk to someone about this--you are literally gambling your family and your safety! if you are elderly and/or disabled, they'll come and bring one and install it, FREE or replace a battery that's dying FREE. call your non-emergency/business fire and police helpline. they'd much rather bring and install a smoke detector, rather than have to carry anyone out in a bag.

I replaced the smoke detector in my RV with this detector. Was easy to install the mounting plate. This detector has two features that I really like. First, the test button will also turn off a false alarm. When cooking the old detector would go off and the only way to shut it up was to remove it from the ceiling and put it by an open window or remove the battery. On this one all I have to do is press the test button and it turns off the alarm. Second, this detector has a mounting ring that attaches to the ceiling and the detector installs in that ring with a twist. This detector has a small plastic pin that inserts into the mounting ring to prevent the detector from untwisting and falling to the floor when driving. My original detector had no such feature and had to be replaced because it worked free and died a horrible death on my RV floor. The detector is supposed to come with a 9V battery but mine did not. No problem, Amazon credited my account a few bucks to cover the cost of the battery. Can't say enough good about Amazon customer service.

Much cheaper than Lowes or Home Depot and easy to install! be aware, these are very sensitive and will go off at the slightest hint of smoke but that's probably a good thing!

Used these to replace 15 year old smoke detectors in my basement. Many reviews say they never got batteries or that the batteries were DOA. Well mine came with batteries and I checked them with a battery tester and the all had over 10 volts in them. They are not alkalines but I expect them to last at least six if not more.
