Effective but can take trial and error
I recently bought some land with a large mole problem. I remember my grandfather using these quite effectively growing up and catching moles. These traps definitely take some trial and error. Not only in learning how to lock them into place, but how to place them correctly in the ground to catch a mole. After a little over a month, I got the hang of it and over the course of about 4 months I have caught 11 moles with 4-5 different traps. These take some time to get use to but they do work great in catching moles. It definitely takes some time to get used to it and it is user error if people say it doesn't work. Major issues for me: A few issues for me is that it doesn't always kill the mole and I have to finish the job, which is not pleasant. Although I have figured out how to set them, they can still be a pain to lock into place.

Extremely difficult to set then....nothing
The first time I set this, it was pretty easy. I literally took it out of the box and went straight to their tunnel and set the trap per the instructions (very crude instructions, I might add). After 2 days, nothing. It rained heavily, and they seemed to move to the other end of the yard, so I pulled up the trap and attempted to set it on the other end of the yard. Wow, could not get the little lever to stay on the outside while I set the trap. Took forever and when I was finally able to set it, it was in the wrong place. Third time I couldn't set it at all and it almost took my finger off. You literally have to hold that lever while you're setting it and that's very dangerous. My daughter asked me why I got such a dangerous trap and I thought, why did I? Well, I thought it was safe. It's really not. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this. All of our neighbors have the scissors' type traps that look like bear traps. Those are scary. I thought this would be safer, but you could lose a finger setting this thing and it didn't work. To those who claim you have to be patient and wait weeks--that's not true at all. ALL of my neighbors had a mole within hours of setting the scissor's type traps. But they also dug up the hole, laid the trap, put a bucket over the top so it was dark, and waited. I don't have the patience for that so I guess I'll try the sonic ones next. I've uploaded three photos so you can see the trap, the box, the instructions, and the lever I'm talking about. The instructions really aren't clear at all. I had to watch several videos on YouTube.

Hard to Use. Soil dependent.
Really hard to set - took quite an amount of time and strength to learn how to set this trap. Almost impossible to tell the tension on the trigger. When it didn't go off for several days - I could tell the hole was cleared by the mole so I tried to trip the trigger and had to use significant force - the mole was never going to push that hard against it. After 5 sets - I have not caught the mole - the hole has always been cleared or re-routed around the device or deeper. It's a daily use tunnel. I compress the tunnel and within a day it's fluffed up and you can easily push a stick through and feel the cavity of the tunnel - but it hasn't set off the trap. Could be that my soil is too soft? Regardless - tons of videos showing this thing catching moles but I've had no luck. The ground in the videos looks more clay and cracked than my forest dirt here in the mountains. My tunnels are also deeper I think - not right up on the surface. Not saying this doesn't work - just saying I it's not nearly as easy to set and use. And it's not as effective as the video claims.

Not for the weak or none mechanically inclined. Work great otherwise.
These are absolute chore to get set correctly but work well once you learn. It comes with a chain whose purpose seems to be in the way. I had a couple of these for years till the spring got too weak to spear the mole. The new ones have great springs but are not manufactured to the tolerance of the those of 20 years ago. Some tweaking with bolt cutter, pliers and a file have them working fine. I bought the newer plastic model that is much easier to use but all 4 of them failed over the next 2 years due to plastic parts breaking

Further instructions...how it works great!
This thing is a God-send for me. I am mechanically minded and I read the reviews of folks having some problems with this. When I got it I could see how the instructions may be a little short. Below I will explain how to set it in detail (from my perspective). THE PROBLEM: I probably had 60 mole tunnels crisscrossing my yard, tearing it up and it was driving me crazy! I tried poisonous gas and over the counter solid poisons for moles and my professional pest control people gave me something stronger to put in the tunnels....nothing worked. I spent about 40 minutes driving over and flattening all the tunnels and then the next day watched about a 30-yard tunnel appear! I tried spearing the bugger but didn't have any luck with that. My neighbor told me about this type of trap so I ordered it. It arrived after dark and I went out with a flashlight to set it for the first time. HOW IT WORKS AND HOW TO SET: 1st flatten all your tunnels and then look the next day for a new active tunnel. You can flatten them by stepping on them with the back of a hoe or do like I did and drive over them the wheel of a car or a riding lawn mower. 2nd โ once you identify the active tunnel find a narrow part of the tunnel and flatten the roof slightly with with shoe or the fist of your hand (thumb depression in instructions is too narrow, I think the depression needs to be as wide as the firing plate). This is where the firing plate will sit and when the mole tries to repair his slightly flattened tunnel he will push up on the firing plate and fire the mechanism. 3rd.Take the two WIDEST spikes of the contraption and straddle the tunnel where you made the depression. Push the entire mechanism down with the wide spikes going into solid earth on either side of the tunnel until the firing plate sets on top of the depression in the tunnel. These wide spikes will hold the trap down when it fires. 4th โ hold the trap down while pulling up and down a couple of times on the top handle that has a spring. This will pull the kill spikes up and down through the tunnel clearing a travel path. 5th โ Now itโs time to set: (some of the reviewers had trouble setting it and I am convinced that it is because the firing plate was too tight against the top of the tunnelโฆI almost always had to pull up about an eighth of an inch on the entire trap to loosen the pressure on the firing plate when setting itโฆ..but not so much that the kill spikes would not reach their depth and target) hold the trap down and pull up on the top handle until the notch in the holding lever holds the plate with the spikes up in the airโฆadjust the depth of the whole trap as described above until it stays. MY GREAT RESULTS: My trap arrived after dark and I went out with a flashlight an set it as described above. I went to dinner and when I came back and it had sprung. I set it again and went to bed. The next day it had NOT sprung again but after several days I had NO NEW TUNNELS. I had a similar experience in the back yard with a tunnel. It sprung within a few hours but after setting it again it never sprung again. The tunnels stopped. I am so happy to find something that actually worked!!!!! Buy it and enjoy!

Scissor type traps are better all around
I normally use the scissor style traps and have found them to be easy to set and effective. i bought these Victors because i needed traps with a narrower geometry to fit up close to hard landscape edging. So far i have set and re-set these traps three times and had the following experience: As others have said they are really hard to set since you're fighting the spring tension, lining up that bottom plate leg on the trigger at the same time. Instructions are not good. So far they have done more damage to me than the moles as on my last set I ended up cutting my finger with it when it triggered unexpectedly (wore leather gloves and it tore those too). i think it was because of that worthless chain hanging off of the end of it that flew around and got me. The only way I can set the thing properly is to do it in my vice in the garage and then take it to the mole track - while putting a small screwdriver through the top hole as a safety catch until its placed. If i keep using them I will need to figure out how to modify them to work better. Bottom lines: These are very hard to set and can lead to user injury if you're not careful. Scissor trap types work better and are much easier/safer to set without having to get on the ground.

Impossible to set trap!
This mole trap is a POS! I must have tried to set it 50 times, following their instructions, and it absolutely would not catch the notch to hold the spring loaded trap in place! So I returned it and got a replacement, thinking it was a flaw in the product. Same thing! I tried to modify the notch by cutting it with a grinder, but again after 50 times I angrily threw it in the garbage. Don't buy it! I'll order another product to see if I have any better luck.

My Epic Mole Trap Saga: How I Became the Backyard Mole Hunter Extraordinaire!
So, let me tell you about my recent adventure in backyard warfare against a mole that had turned my yard into its personal playground. For two weeks, I tried every trap and trick in the book, but this little guy was smarter than I anticipatedโlike a furry Houdini with a penchant for landscaping destruction! Enter my secret weapon: a mole trap! It looked promising, and I thought, โThis is it! Iโll finally reclaim my yard!โ I set it up with all the enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning, convinced I was about to score my first big win. Spoiler alert: I was wrong. For two weeks, I was basically running a five-star resort for moles. โWelcome to the Mole Mansion! We have complimentary worms and a luxury mud bath!โ After my trap sat idle and my mole continued to party like it was 1999, I decided it was time to escalate the situation. Thatโs when I had a brilliant idea: combine the mole trap with some road flares! Because nothing says โI mean businessโ quite like the smell of smoke and the glow of flares lighting up your yard like a scene from a spy movie. Picture this: me, standing in my backyard at dusk, holding a mole trap in one hand and a couple of road flares in the other, looking like a confused pyrotechnician. โAlright, Mr. Mole, you have two choices: step into the trap or enjoy the fiery spectacle Iโve prepared for you!โ The combination of the trap and the flares worked like a charm! The mole, apparently not a fan of backyard bonfires, decided it was time to pack its bags and move on to a less eventful neighborhood. I can only imagine it scurrying away, muttering to itself about the crazy human who tried to light up the yard like the Fourth of July. In conclusion, if youโre looking to stop yard damage from moles, this product is a solid choice! And if you really want to up your game, throw in some road flares for dramatic effect (just maybe donโt tell your neighbors). Who knew that capturing a mole could turn into such a hilarious adventure? My yard is safe again, and Iโve officially earned the title of โMole Hunter Extraordinaire.โ Now, if only I could get rid of the squirrelsโฆ ๐๐พ๐ณ

Get medieval on them
