Unable to understand and communicate basic issues necessary to fix problems with my system
I had high hopes for this system and was very pleased with my first experience with tech support. That all changed today with a second call I needed in order to resolve problems I had with getting playback of events. The system wasn't functioning properly.Apparently the level of compression needed to change so the system could display more than one camera feed at a time because my monitor was unable to display what the system was sending. The system responded by only sending the feed from one camera. This is one of the things the tech support people told me.Neither the tech support person I spoke with, nor her supervisor after I requested to talk with someone else, seemed able to understand or communicate the very basic concepts of what’s involved with video compression. They spoke of the two levels of compression my system could do. The problem was that they spoke in terms of a higher compression size, rather than file size, and couldn't communicate outside of the language they had been trained in so we could be clear what they were trying to say. What they said was that a higher compression size made a larger file. Well, actually that's not how compression works. More compression results in a smaller file and a lower quality image. The whole reason to compress something is to save space but we do that at the cost of some level of degradation. We can’t get something for nothing. As I tried to reassure myself I was dealing with people who were competent they tried to throw irrelevant factors in, like what sorts of images I was trying to capture which is not at all important. I kept trying to see if I could resolve the misunderstanding because I hoped it might just be a matter of miscommunication. What ended up happening though was rather than being able to apply the concepts involved to the language they used, they got frustrated with me. The supervisor told me she'd used the same language with network engineers and I was the first person to have a problem. Unfortunately, at that point she was trying to tell me she hadn't had any problems with experts rather than acknowledge the problem we were having with trying to communicate what was happening.I ended up telling them that I felt they were unable to understand the basic concepts we needed to talk about and that I'd return the system. it's really unfortunate these supposed experts apparently didn't understand how to communicate very basic concepts.
